People don't give a shit about firefighters or paramedics until they're in an accident or family member needs to go to hospital.
Firefighters are an insurance policy for whatever town they're in.
So what, they get compensated well.

It's the only job where you can sit on your ass 90% of the time and be called a hero for it.
Firefighters have so much spare time that they often have nothing better to do than visit schools of elementary kids and show off the truck. Most of the time they're sitting around drinking beers or starting fires themselves according to other members.
