I remember this like it was yesterday.  Everyone in the room yelling at him to stop as he opened the manila envelope.  national news on every network.  sad.  inspired a filter song.

Yeah, like that old "Guess the Movie" thread. Obsessed for a short while, then blah.

Great thread!

This thread truly demonstrates the mental power of getbiggers.  Not only can we deliver examples of impending doom that we recall... but we are able to read thread and instantly access a lifetime of experiences, filtering this scheme in a fraction of a second and thinking about that time in our life when we were exposed to each particular image, at the same moment we recognize the image.  great thread!

Some networks ran the conference live, remember? Worst thing I'd ever seen, at the time.

"ABC news is going to stop the film here, out of respect for our viewers, due to the graphic nature, but we can tell you that he fired the gun and committed suicide."

I still hear the words in my head, something along those lines.  More impactful was everyone in my house, the look of shock on mom and dad's faces, jaws ajar.  it wasn't until years later that I morbidly discovered the actual video - Far less impactful later.  I was only 11 at the time, but I remember it well.  That 357 looked HUGE.

I was pretty traumatized, I recall. Hadn't seen such stuff before. Something extra disturbing about suicide, considering the mindset and all. Think I was 19 or so.

Yeah, it was the only suicide I can remember form my childhood, aside from fckers jumping off the Y-bridge in Akron, OH, all the time and landing on houses below.  Pricks.  If you want to kill yourself, fine, but aim for the ground, will you?  Don't ruin someone's home.  With the budd thing, the voices and profanity in the room... I think the news paused audio and let you hear the shot, screaming, etc.  Lots of cussing, I think.  Video later, it was gruesome, blood everywhere, nothing hollywood about it.

In retrospect, I have to respect Budd just a little... he was almost 50 and facing 55 years in prison.
WIKI: Since Dwyer died in office, his widow Joanne was able to collect full survivor benefits, totaling over $1.28 million.

Yes, it's the coward's way out, but he did it in a way to provide for his wife.  Sad sad all around.

Sledge hammer.  Great silly cop show from the 80s.  That was how the show ended one season.  They came back with "5 years earlier..." episodes.  Sledge Hammer was a total getbigger.

Was that a shark-jumper scene?

pretty much.  show was weak in retrospect, but compared with "Perfect Strangers" and "Eight is Enough" and "Mr Belvedere" and Family Matters and Full House lol.... and Diff'rent strokes... and all the other 80s tv garbage, Sledge hammer was ahead of its time.  VIOLENT  in a world full of tv shows that always had an emotional talk at :24 of each half-hour episode.
