With regards to addictions.

I hate to break it to you but every single poker player of any fucking consequence has to be addicted to gambling to succeed, its actually a perquisite just like taking steroids is to be successful in bodybuilding.

What separates the winners from the loser are the guys that can in time learn to control their addiction and turn themselves into  winners by casting aside their random betting and make positive EV bets.

Very few people successfully mange this and it takes time.

Just like most people don't become IFBB pro's its very tough to make it in the gambling world but once you do the rewards are tremendous (exponentially so compared to say Bodybuilding)

It's not just a question of technical expertise at the game (most good pros have that) its everything else that goes with it including game selection, bank roll management etc because 90% if people don't do their research or put the hard work required in.

I think you are coming from this more from an online poker perspective and what you are saying is completely understandable and I would never play online poker these days unless I am fucking around in some SCOOP events or just want to pass the time.

To be sitting in front of a computer screen 15 hours a day grinding will destroy your soul no question.

80% of the time I am betting sports these days anyway and will play odd poker game live when a good game pop around.

Off course the guys that made it online did so during the moneymaker era as you say where there were plenty of fish in the sea.

You have to bear in mind I come from a live cash game background, I have been playing live cash since I was 17.

Its a totally different experience and one that can be quite social as well as highly enjoyable unlike online poker.

The skill you need for live cash are tremendously different you need to learn to be able to read people, judge situations, adapt and change gears accordingly, game select meticulously, travel around and find the best games, I love it because it appeals to the adventurer in me and always has done.

It amuses me how these so called internet maths wizards who do well online are the biggest fish when it comes to playing live.
