Who is worse: Don Henley or Peter Criss?

The two worst drummers in rock and roll. Which one takes the cake? I say Henley.

Technically, the edge goes to Henley.  Henley's meter is much better.

Singing and playing at the same time... Henley blows Peter out of the water.

Vocal quality and song writing ability... please don't ever compare the two.

I'm talking strictly about drumming. Not vocals,  not songwriting. Drums here, pal.

Can't comment, really, as I am not familiar with Henley's drumming, beyond what everyone has heard.

Still, let me say this. Criss is a complete clown on the kit.

It's funny how many average drummers have achieved more fame and fortune than great drummers...

Some examples are...

Charlie Watts
Ringo
Don Henley
Peter Criss
Mick Fleetwood

I'd add Lars and Steve Adler.

This would have been a great topic in 1978

Ringo never really played the drums in the studio. It was Bernard Purdie.

Lars Ulrich by far.

How this talent-less guy made it this far in the music industry is beyond me.

Despite his lack of studied technique and natural facility, Lars DID play some cool parts ... at one time. Long, long ago. As far as Metallica's legend, it was achieved with a combination of world-class riffs/songs/albums, right-place-right-time factor, Lars's relentless obsession to succeed, and James's standard-setting rhythm attack and precision.

Four records of timeless thrash metal.

Then one solid-as-shit heavy metal album that caught the mainstream with its first single (having said this, I do not enjoy the effort).

Then ... endless crap and idiocy.

Love 'DC, but I don't think Phil Rudd has ever touched his toms or his ride cymbal.

No kidding! ;D I own all AC/DC's DVDs and the dude just wacks those steady beats for miles, every little bit hitting a cymbal.

But from what I have read, Phil's an otherworldly timekeeper. Like in the studio, he's a machine with insane even tempo.

To be fair, the intro to "Hells Bells" has a few ride taps, and he actually pulled off a very short fill in one song from Black Ice. Forget which one, though.

That's a fucking lie and you know it... Bernie only 'claims' to have overdubbed a few tracks from the Hamburg days PRIOR to Ringo..

Ok, maybe not. His Late Show stuff blows, though.

Also, Keith Moon is overrated as fuck. Way too busy, zero technique, no groove, just seems to be randomly hitting shit without thought or feel.

Not that I am some expert on the guy's playing, but I have always kinda felt the same. Especially about the zero groove deal.

Funny, years ago I worked as a doorman at this club, and one night a band was scheduled to perform and all these twerps kept saying the drummer was some incredible player. So the group takes the stage and it was a trio. Here's this knob wacking everything he can find surrounding his setup at every moment. No groove. No taste. The beat's all over the damn place. Band's speeding up and slowing down to accomodate this tool's display of "virtuosity". It's basically a blues combo and Mr. Drummer has a gigantic kit, featuring every percussive implement one can find. Nothing is making sense and it's one massive barrage of swashing noise. And then one of his asschuggers walks over to me and says ...

"Told you he was amazing!"

 :D

Yeah, just silly. Drums should always complement the music, not distract from it. Even the most ridiculous jazz pros know when to be subtle and simply keep time when that's what a song requires. Bonham was a master of this; he could deliver simplicity and thunder in equal measure, and knew exactly where each fit.

His nickname in the band is the clock.
