My personal stance is give your kid values, educate them but let them make their own mistakes, constantly strive to make them more independent and grown up and be there to lead them to adulthood. Not to keep them a child and spoil them forever which seems to be the way in western countries nowadays.

They just need to learn, in stages, what they do matters. Also, that they need to take care of themselves. Ask most kids now to go to the shop for milk and they will look at you like you're asking them to form a unified theory of physics.
