IN an effort to add a bit more to what I've mentioned above .... Here's an actual story as told to me by Mike Mentzer many years ago.
I'll do my best to present this correctly . but feel free to correct me if the details are not precise.
Many years ago Mike was helping Joe with the magazine ... photos and articles. He eventually visited Joe in Joe's office in Woodland Hills and asked to be paid.
I'm not sure if he was doing this for free before this meeting with Joe but Joe made Mike an offer which Mike was not too happy about ... but accepted none-the-less.
Joe's offer was. "I'll give you a full page in the magazine to see something that will make you money!
That alone is worth $5,000!"
(Actually I could be mistaken by a thousand or two, but close enough....)
SO Mike decided to use that page to sell a training 'pamphlet' . (It sure as hell wasn't a 'book').
As an aside .... Ray did not like the 'deal' at all.
SO a few months later Mike had a full page ad in the magazine which offered his training advice. (I forget the price but I'm gonna make an unintelligent guess that it was $30.)
And shortly after that issue was on the stands, Mike wrent down to check his PO Box at the USPS in Venice, California.
That PO Box was empty except for a note inside.
That note said, 'Come to the front desk for your mail."
