I think that, somehow, people are reading between the lines and suggesting that Stephen A Smith said that the woman provoked the attack.

He was (I think) trying to say that everyone (not just men) needs to think about what they can do to prevent domestic violence, that the goal should not be let's get to a world where a woman can do and say whatever she wants to a man and he can't / won't react physically.

If this was his point he could have made it better.  It came off a bit as "she was asking for it" which is I'm sure how most of ESPN's audience will interpret it.
