Traditional Britsh Dishes
« on: August 09, 2014, 03:57:47 AM »
What are some of the good British dishes someone can eat if you are on a visit.?
I used to go to the CocknBull in Santa Monica and get the sunday "Traditional lamb Dinner with mint sauce.( i think)
I was  surprised how good it was. I always thought you guys eat FishnChips and Bangers only.lol
Whats your favorite British dish and whats your not so favorite?
Thanks

a good traditional cottage pie made with left over roast beef (or lamb but this would be a shepherds pie) is hard to fucking beat.

steak and kidney pudding. has to be homemade, which sadly you never see much anymore.

a roast dinner. no one on earth does roast as good as we do..no one !

fray bentos, chips, mushy peas and gravy :P :P :P :P

Any suggestions where to eat such swanky dishes, when a certain couple would hypothetically be staying in the triangle King's Cross / Tottenham Crt Rd / Barbican early October?

Also, anyone familiar with The Lamb on Lamb's Conduit Rd? Only had the sausage platter and some cider, but never tried the rest of the menu.

Great with gravy,  and also great with a few fried eggs dipped in the yolk.

Here in Holland we don't have a pub culture, so the ones we have are complete shite, only frequented by old men from lower social strata. So I don't trust any pub anywhere unless it is recommended to me. The Lamb was nice, went to a different one in June but was quite drunk and recall very little of the experience. :D

I don't fancy British curries. Always bland and flavourless. Even the ones in an Indian restaurant owned by Indians suck. Spoilt by having them in India, probably.

So 'follow the football jerseys' it is, then.  ;D

Braised lamb shanks are my fave.

Toad in the hole.

Haggis - strangely, the best haggis I've had was cooked by Sri Lankan chefs in Afghanistan.

someone at work recommended this place to me

http://www.rotichai.com/dining_room.html

but she is a bit of a dorkish hipster. probably VP's dream woman. but whether you trust her rec or not is another question.

i have been to benares but thought it was a bit rubbish. chutney mary in chelsea has a good rep. gymkhana on albemarble st has had good reviews but i havent been. chor bizarre is sh1t.

Yes, Lamb and Mint jelly is insanely good. Shepherds Pie is good too.

I still have never had the full english breakfast with beans and blood sausage.  :(
