what happens if say Glasgow votes strongly to stay in the UK and the rest of Scotland votes strongly not to?
would there be partition?
The Scottish secessionists will do two things once independence, or a transition period, is declared: 1) Impede the exodus of assets in Scotland owned by the new Scottish nationals (including corporations,) and 2) Impede further secessionist movements within the Scottish nation. This is exactly what happened when the Ukraine unilaterally declared its independence and quickly launched an illegal land-grab of epic proportions, not giving a hoot as to whether the people within the country really wanted to be Ukrainians. Which is why there is a war in the Ukraine as I write these words.
