I never do flat bench these days and still making progress on my chest.I never train heavy either, I now start with extensions/flies then move on to pressing movements and finish up with press-ups.
You can't make the assertion that a lot of great chests were built with flat barbell.1) Yes, a lot of people with great chests have done flat barbell press. However, these same people also do a lot of other similar exercises.2) People with great chests have the genetics for good chest. So, any exercise they do, they will have a good chest.3) Flat barbell press is probably the most common exercise, yet not many people have great chests.

This kid is totally infatuated with the girl filming him and he ends up choking a major cock! he is only benching 225 lbs and he chokes at rep 8 he locks out and should of had a spotter or racked the weight. The late Serge Nubret did over 20 sets of bench presses. Usually his working weight was 225 but he was able to put up 500.
