Anyone work night shift as a security guard?
« on: September 17, 2014, 09:45:17 PM »
Got my security license, so that I can have flexible hours while doing my Master's degree in school. One agency called me up (so far) and asked me if I could work the next 3 nights (night shift from 10pm-6am) at a hotel. Anyone ever work as a security guard and do you know if you can turn down shifts and still have the agency call you back? Really don't want to be working night shifts every weekend. Will have absolutely no life, plus it will fuck with my sleeping schedule completely.

What happens if you do the job and then just die afterwards.  Would that not be a total waste?  ???

ya i worked nights as security, really depends on the employer. i had a set schedule in which i could not miss work, but my schedule never changed. 14 hour shifts can wear on you though... only so many naps a guy can take  ;D

That being said if you got hired easily, then guards are likely in demand and they will call you for the next available shift.

Clearly the pay isn't enough to make you jump at it.  Why not try pushing them on the money?  Not much, just some.  Maybe 5-10%.  If they budge then you know it's not a fixed budget, they need the help, and you can push a little harder next time and the time after that etc.

Be reliable, in a good mood, thank them for the job at the end but never ask for more work.  Negotiations open with them asking you.

It depends on each company, I have some men who only work set nights, as long as i can cover the wknds it's not a problem.
though i may ask for the odd cover shift from them in return if they are not doing wknd work. (I am UK Based.)

For anyone in university or furthering their studies that can't work a 9-5 I highly recommend waiting tables. Great hours, fun people, and you won't make more money in less time anywhere else.

I'd make $150-$200 a shift and work 4 nights a week.  It was a $50k a year gig for me and I was able to maintain good marks.

$150 * 4 nights * 52 weeks = $31.200 =! $50.000
$200 * 4 nights * 52 weeks = $41.600 =! $50.000

Was your degree in anything math related?

This is actually not a bad gig, as you can probably study on the job.

Lot of turnover in the security biz. If you can show up sober on a regular basis, finding work shouldn't be a problem.

Security license?  Since when do you need a license to be a rent a cop?

Do you carry a gun?... maybe you get a little bit more $ per hour for that.

in California you need a license. Clean background ...no felonies or certain misdemeanors.

Depends on the post and/or client. At my post we can't even read a book. Sucks balls. Looking for another post or to be hired by a different company.

Only good thing is there is A LOT of work and overtime available over the holiday season coming up.

I worked at American Security for 8 years 1999-2007 part time.  No you can't turn down shifts or they'll just not assign you anything.  Security officers are usually employed as independent contractors.

Its best to make requests for days off 2 months in advance.  I usually took one weekend off every 3 months and just went to the clubs on Friday....was groggy Sat but it was cool

If you have decent size why dont  bounceyou at a stripclub instead of a boring hotel at least you will get laid.

The need to pay bills > party life/weekend  :(
I have a friend that used to do that. He would basically sit in his car all night.
So I guess you could still technically study at night?

Here in Canada, we have a union that is supposed to regulate the minimum wage a Security agency can pay you. This particular one is paying significantly less than all the others. They say it depends on what their client pays them that will determine what they pay their agents. That's complete bullshit. They are the only one that I know who pay their agents less. So far my phone hasn't been ringing off the hook with shifts from other agencies, but I know this one is taking advantage of it's agents by paying them below was the industry standard (it's competitors) pay.
