When cop asks to see paper, asks about gun, etc - I always say "I have my permit" (indicating zero criminal record) and then make ZERO move until I tell him I'm going to reach for this or that now.   Then I wait for him to nod or whatever.  Usually by then, he's done enough of a visual inspection to see car seat, lack of blounts or whatever they look for, and less likely to cap my ass. 

Most of the time, cops don't even bother asking about the gun.  If you have a permit, and you're 38, then you haven't done anything wrong for almsot 20 years, they are usually cool.  I do'nt think I've had a cop be a dick to me in a decade.

Where do you keep your papers in your car? I'm guessing the glove box. Reaching for your papers(glove box) before the cop reaches your car may not be a best thing to do. Cop can see you reach across your seat but can't see what your reaching for. Would suck to get a trigger happy cop like the one in this video.

I think we need to hold cops to a higher standard.

You can argue there was no malicious intent. I argue there doesn't need to be malicious intent.

Some people say if a boxer hits a guy then it's "assault with a deadly weapon" because the guy is a trained fighter.

Well this cop was trained too and he deserves to go to jail for what he did, malicious intent or not. He should go to jail for breach of the trust he was placed in.

He should be treated like anyone else would that has commmited a comparable crime. Likely something along the line of criminal negligence.

I always keep my hands on the wheel and when asked for my license and registration, I tell them its in my glove box and ask if I may reach for them.  Don't want to give these guys any remote reason to get nervous.

The police enjoy numerous exclusive privileges and responsibilities, so they most definitely need to be held to a higher standard.  Killing a cop carries a stiffer penalty than killing an ordinary citizen, so it's pretty clear that the law exalts policemen over the general populace.

And it was sheer luck that this individual wasn't permanently disabled or killed.
