I am happily excluding myself from all this Twitter, Instagram, etc. nonsense.

I've literally no idea what 'instagram' is. Twitter I know of vaguely,  just another place for attention whores to puke their mindless ramblings

It can be a great marketing tool if properly used. Lets say you have a BB tank top you want to market. You can send a tweet to a potential customer and have it seen by hundreds, maybe thousands.

Example:   Hey John take a look at our new designs on our web site http://mywebsite #bodybuilding.com #flexmagazine #ironmanmagazine #musculardevelopment. The web site will show as pink or blue and a click will get you on your web page. The #hashtags will land your tweet ALSO into the twitter account of everyone who ever used that word or those words in a search or message. Hundreds...thousands. It takes a bit of initial management but can take off.

I am marketing a book and have had people visit my site from 15 countries incl. Russia in the past 4 days. Being a rank amateur on web marketing I recommend goggling to learn more.

I get that part. The original point was that the marketing makes sense.  But on social media, a whole lot of peopel in the fitness industy, mostly women do this "Had an awesome workout!  #totalfitnessmotivation #gome #fitnessbabeforever #glutessore..." That will be the who post, and none of it links to anything...   Is it to be cute, because they can't write sentences, or just a stupid meaningless trend.??

Does it link to something, though? Does it just become a long thread? Say I gave a shit, do I just retweet with the same hashtag? Totally lost here.

Doesn't seem too effective if it doesn't link, it would seem.

A short explanation,

Using hashtags to categorize Tweets by keyword:

People use the hashtag symbol # before a relevant keyword or phrase (no spaces) in their Tweet to categorize those Tweets and help them show more easily in Twitter Search.
Clicking on a hashtagged word in any message shows you all other Tweets marked with that keyword.
Hashtags can occur anywhere in the Tweet – at the beginning, middle, or end.
Hashtagged words that become very popular are often Trending Topics.

Example: In the Tweet below, @eddie included the hashtag #FF. Users created this as shorthand for "Follow Friday," a weekly tradition where users recommend people that others should follow on Twitter. You'll see this on Fridays.

Using hashtags correctly:

If you Tweet with a hashtag on a public account, anyone who does a search for that hashtag may find your Tweet
Don't #spam #with #hashtags. Don't over-tag a single Tweet. (Best practices recommend using no more than 2 hashtags per Tweet.)
Use hashtags only on Tweets relevant to the topic.

Ah, it's a search deal. Someone said that earlier, but it didn't click. Thanks, DP.
