I think Hellwig made the biggest impact in the shortest time. He didn't occupy that spot for long, but it was enough to cast doubt in Hogan's mind.
Do you think if Hellwig wasn't so difficult and left 2-3 x he would have had a longer run and perhaps eclipsed Hogan?
Goldberg was the same with less yelling. No staying power in terms of them performing on a big stage for a while.
Yeah. I also think that for characters that are so one-dimensional, there's only so much you can do with them. I've mentioned this before: guys like Flair would revisit feuds - usually multiple times. They could work programs that drew money with the same talent over and over. The paradigm of Hogan, UW, Goldberg, etc. is that they had a buildup, and then the grande finale in which they mowed down their opponent. There was seldom a "part II." As a result, the promotion had to bring in new faces to feed the formula.
Slaughter, Martel etc used to go to work on the back to set up their respective finishers, you knew where they were heading and believed how much pain the guys were in. Today there are some absolute stinkers, moves that when you analyse them arent much different than a suplex or back drop. When was the last time you saw somebody go down to a suplex or a back drop!
That's true but he sold it well. Just like when Rick Rude would do his neck breaker. I thought when I was a kid dudes were dying. Or the Perfectplex, you knew a dude couldn't get out of it.
Warriors splash has to be the worst of all time for superstardom. Back in the day you genuinely thought the Dooms Day device would kill you, or that the Tombstone would knock you out, hell you even believed The Bossman Slam to an extent. Some of the shit they throw together these days is ridiculous, MVP had to be the worst.
