PJ Braun chest training
« on: November 30, 2014, 09:47:39 AM »
I'm posting this on here because I forgot my login for MD and too lazy to retrieve it. But I was looking at his training video for chest and it's a typical bodybuilders except without the heavy movements. It is what it is. Not that my opinion matters but the dude had a pretty good shoulder injury and throughout the workout he was on almost all machines, all closed chain and fixed (smith, chest press, pec deck, etc). Little room for muscle recruitment to help the actual stabilizer(s) get stronger, regain mobility and flexibility. It's all isolation. Anyone with a shoulder problem like this or similar shouldn't isolate. We do about 5-6 either rehabs or post PT rehabs a year and the last thing that's recommended is machine work and very careful to not isolate, overhead press, no straight bar (unless it's a bamboo press for the rehab).

In his back lat spread he said he had a hard time pulling out the right lat due to the injury and I couldn't read all of the report (because it was blurry).

Long story short, don't rehab on machines, strengthen stabilizers (subscap especially), lots of flexibility movements, use free weight for primary movers (again, not machines).

Why did I post this? Because bodybuilding hasn't progressed in 50 years and rehab just doing trying different machines until you find one that doesn't hurt. Just because it doesn't hurt doesn't mean the injury is healed. I don't know how he injured himself but it looks almost trauma-like.

We have an ortho that works with us as well as a PT but since we generally get better results than a PT....

Good post
It's the case of a syngerist trying to do the job of a weak prime mover
When assessing the factors that contribute to overuse syndrome one of the rules is to determine whether one or more of the syngerists of the strained muscle is also weak
When the syngerist is weak the muscle strain is probably the result of excessive demands

And why not rehab with the use of machines? The stabilizers will adequately be affected with well placed dumbbell work..

With wear and tear and with older lifting enthusiasts, the stabilizers will not accommodate well with compound barbell exercises anyway... In this case, machines are a viable and effective substitute to affect the target muscle proper while sparring compromised joints and connective tissue...

If barbell exercises are employed anyway, then they should be utilized only after performing exercises on machines, or cable work.. This will in effect 'pre-condition' the area prior to exposure to compound movements making them much safer... Remember; it is the heavy compound burst exercises that over time caused the damage to begin with... This is called 'training smart'...

Damn, that MRI report is hard to read but without getting too technical it basically says Coath PeePees shoulder is fucked

I'm amazed he can lift at all with that much damage, my labrum is a tiny bit frayed and it shuts me down fast when I try doing Bad Lifts

I know very few PT's, orthos, good trainers or coaches that rehab on machines anymore. This isn't the 90's. And the fact that it's been proven that machine work is somewhat detrimental and slows the process is another reason.

It's on my desk at the gym. Last year we had Charlie Weingroff come in and train with us when he was at the Perform Better. We're going to get him as a speaker sometime this year.

yes machines are worse for joints imo too. it's a fixed path, not allowing your natural lifting parthway.

like if you're benching on a machine it will lower in a 90 degree angle. totally fucks your shoulders

This is PJ's rear lat spread from his beat PJ posing routine. Not good.

Go to 2:12

PJ is this some sort of nerve damage or impingement?
