Charles Bronson would know how to solve this little 'protestor problem'.

I know a little about Paul Kersey

I wouldn't do it because I'm not that kind of fella.  I've decided not to reply to pms myself.  People take conversations from pm and bring them to the board.   And RRkore, for verification I will only say I hope you and your wife(chanisa?) had as much fun in Thailand as it looks like you did.

Fuckin' A, we did have a great time!!

Made all these folks grumbling about shit here in the USA and on this board look like they're misusing their time because they don't know how fun life can be.

I wish I had known about Thailand and its crazy culture (so, so different than in the West) when I was a lot younger.

Serious question.  Whats the cost difference between going to Thailand and say someplace like Hawaii or Fiji?  I've been to Hawaii four out of the last five years.  I love everything about Hawaii but am looking for something different.  I'd like to maximize my dollars as well.

Jeezus freakin' Christ!! Are you kidding!?!?!   Thailand DESTROYS Hawaii.

I've only been to Kauai, but it was after having been to Thailand so it was pretty much "meh".  If you ask me, the only thing better about Hawaii is the waves and probably folks in Hawaii are better drivers than Thai people (for whom traffic laws are only traffic suggestions, lol.)

Thailand is far cheaper, there's no crime to worry about as a tourist, and about a million times more culturally interesting than Hawaii and, except for surfing decent waves, anything you can do in Hawaii you can do in Thailand.  And then some.

If you haven't been to Thailand before but like beach vacations, then I'd recommend the big island of Phuket somewhere not far from Patong Beach which is the nightlife center.  If Patong Beach is too touristy for you, you can always relocate to a quieter part of the island but you'll probably want to rent a car (about $30-/day) if you do that.  My first 3 trips to Phuket I rented a motorcycle (a CB400, I think, for about $12/day) but I don't do that anymore since crashing in 2009.

So, what kind of stuff do you do on vacation in Hawaii?  Re: price, it depends on how cheap you want to be and what kind of activities you like to do.  If you stay in a crappy place with no AC (I don't recommend this), eat street food only (street food is the bomb -- I could eat the $2- grilled chicken and sticky rice every day), and "pre-drink" at 7/11, you can get by on surprisingly little money.

No matter what, though, most activities are much cheaper (less than half) than what you'd pay for the same thing here in the USA.  So, bungee jumping, go-kart racing, para-sailing, sea-kayaking around small islands, snorkeling, ATV tours, attending Muay Thai fights, seeing a ladyboy cabaret and watching, uh, ping-pong sex shows are all things I've done in or near Phuket.  Zip-lining, elephant trekking, going to the shooting range, fishing, or tours of various gaudy temples are things I haven't done -- but not because they're too expensive.  It's easy to be a baller in Thailand, lol.

For my wife and I, we've found that budgeting about $100-/per day (includes hotel but not car rental) is fine.  We usually limit our hotel choices to places that are no more than $50-/night and prefer hotels with no more than about 50 rooms.  (The hotel we liked the best this trip is called The Viridian which was offering a special rate on Agoda.com.)

BTW, I'm assuming you're bringing your woman so you'll probably be spending money on massages and salon stuff (body scrubs, facials, and the like) all of which is much, much cheaper than in the West.  Women also usually like all the knock-off goods you can find everywhere.  One year I bought fake Gucci purses for every female in my family and they were a big hit, lol.

Also, you are a guy with a lot of gym miles on you, right?  If so, then a vigorous 1 or 2 hour Thai (like a deep tissue) massage (for about $15-) is something that you'll want to do at least every other day.  Seriously, it can be glorious.  This last trip there was this one awesome massage lady who I didn't think would do a good job because she was so slight but there was a point when she was walking sideways up my back balancing on the edges of her feet while working her way up my spinal erectors when I swear that my appreciation for her started turning into something like love, lol.

If you're going without your woman then, well, you won't be without female company for long but that will usually cost you, although your mileage may vary.  (And, actually, they say to beware of the Thai woman with whom you hook up but doesn't want any money the following morning -- She's trying to get you caught up in the long con, lol.)

Check it out yourself;  Go to agoda.com and check hotel prices in phuket, patong beach.  What I like to do is just book the first couple of nights and then use Agoda's "flash deals" to find hotels offering huge temporary discounts so we can stay at nice places and not pay much.  There are so many hotels in Phuket these days that this strategy works even during high season.

Feel free to ask any more questions.  Here's a couple of non-nightlife videos I like to show folks (with wives) who are interested in checking out Thailand:

You've only been to Kauai, but Thailand "DESTROYS Hawaii"?  lol  You realize there are eight islands in Hawaii?

I've been to several Asian countries and some islands in that part of the world, but never Thailand.  Hawaii destroys Thailand.

See how uninformed that sounds?

Whatever.

I was expressing my opinion about the subject of which vacation place is better so subjectivity is unavoidable and expressing opinions without being completely informed could be the motto of this board, actually.

Honestly, that argument (that expressing opinion without being completely informed is in keeping with this board and so it should be ok) should resonate with you since it's something you do yourself.  (I will cite your posts about the danger of Ebola in the USA as just one example.)

But, anyway, subjective or not, if you'd like to try to debate me about any of the Hawaiian islands being a better vacation spot than some places in Southern Thailand when "bang for the buck" is an important factor (as Archer's post seemed to indicate) then look forward to losing.

Happy New Year!

I'm not going to debate you about whether Thailand is a better vacation spot than Hawaii, because I've never been to Thailand.  You don't know squat about Hawaii, but that isn't going to stop you from talking out of your rear end.  Was just trying to enlighten you a little.  Obviously futile.

Happy New Year.

Enlighten me?  lol  About what?   That you think that I shouldn't pass judgement on Hawaii without having been to other islands?   Because that's all you've said.

How's about you read the rest of my long-ass post about vacationing in Phuket, not just the part where you think I unfairly dissed Hawaii?  Then YOU will be the one being enlightened, I'm thinking.

Funny thing is that you're not even disagreeing with me about whether Thailand IS better or not just that you don't think I have enough info to speak so authoritatively.  (Which is totally a case of the pot calling the kettle black, lol.)

It's almost like you're joking by saying I'm not informed enough about Hawaii to have an opinion and then follow that up by saying I don't know squat (about Hawaii).  Because if not knowing "squat" means I don't know anything then you're exaggerating because what I do know is that Phuket, which has similar looking beaches, is the more culturally interesting place for Americans looking for new experiences, is more free of crime, and is by far the better value.

If there are islands in the chain where all of that isn't true, then I'm all ears.  We don't need to debate, it'd just be you laying a little knowledge on me and I'll be better off for it.

Seriously, if you want to extol the virtues of Hawaii, I promise I'll listen.

You are missing the point, which happens often.  I'm not trying to say one is better than the other.  I'm saying you don't have enough information to say one is vastly superior to the other, because unlike you, I've been to all of the islands and lived here for a very long time, and you've probably spent a few days on one of the smaller islands in the state, which gives you very little perspective.

I could care less whether you or anyone else actually likes one place better than the other.  That's not the point I'm making.  It's about talking about of your rear end.

Dude, really?

I'm missing the point of what you've said?  No, I get your point and paraphrased it in at least 2 places in my post that you've quoted.

I just think you're being hypocritical when you make it since you do this kind of thing a lot yourself. (Ebola, remember?)

I also think it's silly to focus on that part of my post when A) There was a lot of worthwhile stuff in that post and B) The post was directed at a specific person who is not you.

Serious question:  Do you make these kinds of posts that add so little to the board where you correct someone over something trivial along with mild insults because you're trying, as a mod, to get action on the board via a response?  Because surely there must be a lot of other things you could be doing that are more fun, right?

Methinks you should go to Phuket, if you can afford it.  One thing I forgot to mention is that there are many, many, many older tourists there -- and they're smiling lot teenagers, many of them.

Keep it up, dipshits...pretty soon you'll have a police force that does nothing but respond after the fact to calls.  No patrols..no public interaction.  Just a bunch of guys and gals sitting in the station avoiding any contact with the general populace for fear of lawsuits and murder attempts.

arrests and tickets could be down because of the stated reason. However the difference between December of 2013 and 2014 is that NYPD likely were being tagged with special initiatives and assignments due to the unrest and the drop was a byproduct of that.

Nah. 99% of what NY police do is revenue collection. In general, the city is exactly as safe as it was 2 weeks ago.

But but but

But but but

A friend of mine has a house in Phuket that is currently 'rented out' to a drug dealer who pays no rent and cannot be moved because he's the son of someone in power.

I can't even say who that someone is because by Thai law, it is a criminal offense to say something bad about someone, even if it is true.

Phuket is the most crime ridden part of Thailand.
