In the interview above Arnold said he told no one he was entering when he decided to enter about 3 weeks out. That is not true. Paul Graham knew and he told me so about that time when I visited him at him home in Bondi Junction to pick up more tickets. I was told so we could sell more tickets. They were $35 each and our gym sold 200 tickets = $7,000. There was a big trophy for the gym that supported the contest the best but Paul said there was no time to award it! I yelled out after the contest about the trophy. I picked it up took off the plaque and we sent the trophy to Chris Dickerson in LA. John Doyle took it over. We had a meeting about the Olympia and several of us formed a new bodybuilding organization because we weren't happy about what happened with Paul running things. The magazines didn't report that Chris was awarded a trophy by the bodybuilders of Australia. Quite unprecedented I believe for the 2nd place winner to get such an award.

As a Judge I have Arnold as the winner & he was.

He didn't do to well in 80. Thought he was smooth for that show. Big but smooth.  I thought Roy Callender was overlooked big time as you said. In some pics standing next to Mentzer, Dickerson and Zane it's obvious he's carrying a lot more muscle than those guys, especially in the chest and other than calves his legs were among the best at the show.

In an article I wrote about the contest I urged Danny to come back cut to pieces and that is exactly what he did in 81 and 82. They still didn't give it to him. The history of bodybuilding is a strange one. In the old days anyone who wanted to promote a contest would worry about getting an audience. The solution was all the local gym owners were invited to judge and they would bring competitors and families, etc. If judges voted for their own competitors their votes would be cancelled by the others. Seemed to work. Trouble was were those gym owners good judges?

The selection of judges in the IFBB isn't an open and transparent process. Seven judges aren't enough, either, if two scores are removed leaving 5 voting judges. The NABBA Universe evolved to have many more judges. Something like 15. That way the contestants feel a fairer process should occur. Politics does play a part especially if promoters have a say in the selection of judges.

I edited another photo. Quality not good but result is acceptable. This was taken during the comparisons supposed to be doing a triceps pose. Clearly Arnold is also posing his biceps which shouldn't be allowed. He wasn't penalized for transgressions but was warned several times by Oscar State.

Great shot Vince , goes to show you that every single photo from that contest is the possibility of a new controversy... unreal that 1980 Olympia was .

"In the spirit of fairness" yeah right ,  Bill had no problem judging and awarding first place to Chris Dickerson at the Grand prix a month before the Olympia.
