Reality is though he had a flat chest, narrow shoulders, small arms with no peak, undeveloped back with deformed traps, a fat ass, protruding gut and poor posing. So no, he had no chance of winning at all. He came 5th.

His lats weren't that flared either and he only wish his condition looked like this. There's been filters or slight photoshop or both done to this pic.

I wouldn't call Padilla, Tinerino, Platz, Robinson,Duval ,Boyer,Walker ( Fan Boys) they might not have Mentzer as "the best physique on that stage" but they felt he was better than Zane and Dickerson .... And some even better than Arnold

Wrong ...  Only the background was touched/darken to make the physique stand out more  ....  just look at the pic posted on the post before, mike is behind Zane (further away from camera) yet he looks bigger and better than Zane and the chest looks as good as the picture I just posted......


There's a lot of pictures where Mike looks fairly better (not only the hidden/buried  CBS footage) sadly at the time Busek,Balik,Vince and two others  photographers I can't remember their names sold the pics to "Vader" and Arnie .....

Mentzer looked great but he came in 5th. Not second or third. You can't just look at still pictures, you have to look at the video too. I think the placings were correct. Arnold at 80% was better than the rest even with the light legs. If anyone had a complaint it would have been Chris Dickerson who came in second in second in three Olympia's and was winning all the big pro shows like the various Grand Prix contests that he and Coe alternated winning. Zane was probably the most ripped he ever was but was down in weight from cutting his dick on a sharp edge on a pool chair tanning that collapsed. Coe was probably the best he ever was in that contest. The one that might have a true beef was Roy Callender. He is so black that if the lights weren't bright he would look washed out. Back then he really was placed lower than he should have in so many contests. Padilla was off.

Great analysis. Boyer was his best ever but his ab genetics would always hold him back. Dickerson and Padilla were just too short to go up against Arnold. Zane's genital injury was brutal. Mentzer was 5th! 5th place which was a gift. Roger Walker got screwed.

Ok.. its good evidence that he was pretty far off in 1980. This pic is pretty impressive.

I read his article about his year leading up to the 80 Olympia he talked about using amphetamines to maintain his hectic life, his training seminars and mail order business and he detailed the impact his fathers death had on him. He said he was sleeping 4 hes a night. It would explain his flat appearance. His cortisol was probably through the roof.
