This is the eagle nebula, also known as the pillars of creation.  They are about 7000 light years from earth and about 90 trillion kilometers long.
Looks like my toilet bowl after a morning shit.

Seriously though, good thread.

Saw that pic awhile ago and it is insane.  I believe those might be frozen like that due to an explosion.....

Astronomers believe that this nebula may not exist anymore. as it may have been destroyed by a supernova about 9000 years ago, but the light has not reached us yet.

Some people make Katanas, others make telescopes.

Telescopes wouldn't exist without Katanas...And if Islam controlled the Globe, telescopes would seize to exist again...

The vastness of space is truly mind-boggling.....light years especially.....it amazing that space is so  vast that it could take 100,000 years to get to another solar system...and that's if we were traveling the speed of light...AMAZING

Also...it always fascinates me as to EXACTLY WHAT was here BEFORE the Universe

Apparently there's a book whose main protagonist sat somewhere in the middle of nowhere and started experimenting with different words. Random things started appearing until everything was fully formed and ready to go.

Dude we get it, you re an anti natalist who hates life and children, and wish mankind could disapear asap because man is evil. You get all your fun from bringing down other people who happen to have kids. Must be tough for a woman who loves life to stand by your side. You pretend to love women more than conservatives yet think kids are disgusting and dont want any and prolly brainwashed your girl into thinking the same. At the same time you pretend to be a manly man showing off alpha male/conservative traits randomly etc to reassure you in your manhood constantly... You re pretty confused, twisted to say the least. What s next, changing your sex just like bruce jenner? You also always pretend to be an humanist while it's obvious you cant hide your disdain for colored people... In fact you have everyone, just like carlin, not just conservatives. The funny is that without conservatives as a target, you wouldnt have anything to say. You need them and somewhat envy them. As a whole and for someone who s been reading you for a while, it's obvious you re not making any sense and just make up bullshits as you go. You re a nihilist who randomly travestites himself as a humanist. Stop pretending you know it all as you re as lost as the people you make fun of. You re in this shit just like all of us and doing your best to keep your head above the water to enjoy one more day.
I don`t follow any ideology genius, only reason, evidence and science.  Yes, I am a humanist and at times a utilitarian.  I also recognize problems and why they occur.  You for instance, used to be a religious moron.  It was what kept you going and what you thought was going to save you.  When shit fell apart, and your jesus was silent, reality hit you.  Now you realize all you used to believe has been a lie and you are angry.  I wonder what that must feel like, to be deluded so long and living in a cloud for decades, not seeing the universe and life as it truly is.

Anyways, abortion is the best policy for the world.  You like to announce how the third world muslims are out birthing everyone, yet you are against abortion.  Hilarious.  Nobody is forcing abortion on anyone, but keeping the choice alive is better for society, humanity and the entire world.  Do you really think the world would benefit from another Uberman?  I don`t.

Somehow I think you missed my point.  I was referring to the parallels of katana makers with amateur opticians who grind the mirrors to their telescopes themselves.

Yes, I can rectify it: TA is a miserable little democrat bitch.

I am a conservative/libertarian that supports small government, individualist candidates with my considerable largess.

I am a Catholic who supports the pro-life position and (*gasp*) believes in evolution.

I am a climate skeptic because meteorologists can't figure out if a snowstorm is going to hit NYC in 12 hours, how the fuck can they predict temperatures 200 years in the future?

Deal with it, bitches.

i think it was always here.  big bang was actually just a whole bunch of matter hitting a corner, or bouncing into another huge pile of matter, and going BANG.

either way, we could spend the next 50 years just contemplating the vastness, the growing nature, the possible origins, and be right where we are now.  Amazing to understand how infantile our understanding of the universe is... imagine the amazing brainpower of a culture that can travel from galaxy to galazy instantly... the things they'd see and know... how energy works, how travel works, how phil keeps winning olympias...  our little pea brains couldn't comprehend...

So you are with Fred Hoyle and the "Steady State" Theory?

What about the "Cosmic Background Radiation" at 160 Gigahertz?  With this value plugged into Planck's Function it yields an average temperature of the Universe at 3o Kelvin.

I have an idea, why don't you explain your obvious eugenics opinions? Don't poor babies deserve to live?

I am far too old and experienced to fall into your traps, little one.

U mentioned u got a son. Do u also have a daughter? If yes, would u still be pro life? What if she had unwanted pregnancy, u would force her to raise it? I know families still support pro life, even when their daughter is a teen. If u are one of them, I have nothing to say. But mostly, people with sons find it convenient about pro life choices.

I think you are right on about us not being anywhere advanced enough to understand the origins of the universe.
While there is some evidence for the big bang, such as background radiation and galaxies moving away from each other, it is still just a theory.  Who's to say that at some point all the galaxies will one day stop and then start coming back together until there is a single point? And then the big bang starts all over again?  What if this is a continuous cycle that has gone on for trillions of years?

100,000 years from now there might be a whole new theory, but it will still be beyond what can be known.

The colors you see in photos taken by Hubble are enhanced.  Hubble detects light from all the visible spectrum including ultraviolet and infrared.  Many photos are taken through different colored filters, say light coming through a green filter is given a green color, a blue filter is assigned blue and so on.  If you were in a space ship things might look different but i think they would be pretty close.

Carl Sagan was one of my childhood idols.  In 1980 I would be glued to the tv set/PBS every Tuesday night at 9pm to watch the newest episode.  I taped all the original episodes on VHS.  I still have them and still watch them from time to time.  A few years later, I learned how to play all the Vangelis piano/music compositions from the show.
