I actually think they're somewhat serious about this issue but here's the problem. What they're actually saying is, "We need to lessen the doping in bodybuilding".  They don't really mean eliminate it in their heart of hearts.  What Arnold probably says in a private conversation is: 1) The guts look ugly 2) the bodybuilders are getting themselves in trouble and having health problems 3) these guys aren't good role models any more and our image is suffering.

The problem is that it has to be YES or NO to really go anywhere.  How do you manage anything in between.  Might as well just leave it a YES and let bodybuilding and its fans decide this on their own.

Thing is.... It was the streamlined late 80's and 90's that were actually dying, freezing on stage, collapsing back stage etc.... The new glazed donut look doesn't seem to kill them at once anymore

Someone once said something along the lines of old men care about where/how they built their wealth/earned their money.

Just like Ben and Joe lobbied to get bodybuilding accepted as an Olympic "sport" (thus in theory making their wealth look legitimate instead of being earned via socially unaccepted pastime) it appears Arnold is having a hard time accepting that bb has only regressed since its cultural peak of the 80s, despite the culture being health and fitness minded.

Today you can find gyms all across America, no mater how small the town, this wasn't the case in Arnolds era, yet despite this bodybuilding is akin to beauty patents for little girls, a completely niche lifestyle, while mens physique and woman's figure/bikini is growing exponentially.

It seems Arnold wants to preserve bodybuilding and he feels its only hope is for it to go back towards his era, which was considered a sideshow during his time.

Excellent points, Spot on

Interesting how yes bodybuilding is still such a niche activity despite the explosion of gyms everywhere.
Figure competition for women is booming nonetheless...

Curiosity question:  How intense a cycle is today's NPC or IFBB PHYSIQUE competitor on compared to today's NPC or IFBB BODYBUILDING competitor?  One quarter, one third as intense?  One half to two thirds as intense?  I assume some of you guys have competed in both since there has been a shift recently from bodybuilding to physique.  You would have experience with this question. If much less, then the "lessening" (rather than full elimination) is kind of working I guess.

This is classical 'bees against honey' action. Just like 'rock against drugs' in 60-80's.
Would like to know why do they even bother.
It must be traditional demonstration for the people outside bodybuilding that it is actually a sport and IFBB disapproves doping usage. Just in case.

It literally baffles my mind. I thought bodybuilding got a bad rap because it contained so many arrogant d bags (who weren't anyone anyhow) but the same "type" of guy is doing men's physique,  and people love it (I'm not saying they're all d bags but those stereotypes have stuck with builders, even though most are some of the nicest most helpful guys ever when it comes to life style info).

I know just as many dudes that talk about/compete in men's physique competitions as I do that follow/compete in bb. I still don't even understand what exactly men's physique is.

Bodybuilding did itself in by going to extremes.  When Arnold ripped Dorian for having to much mass during his Mr. O run everyone saw it as sour grapes and Arnold being stuck in the past and not being able to come to grips with the natural progress of the sport, which maybe somewhat valid. However, once again, Arnold was ahead of the curve and saw this train wreck coming from miles away. More guys want to look like that druggie Zzyzes (however it's spelled) then any other druggie in the ifbb. .....  That should speak volumes, and I think that's why the board shorts comp is so popular.

Don't even get me started on the bikini/figure chick's at the gym. I know a handful of them,  they don't talk with one another, compete in the same shows let alone support each other. They're all mid 20s, in relationships or married to dudes that don't do any sort of training.  It's strange (although this could be exclusive to my gym but it's still weird).

In a lot of areas the fitness trend has changed. You see more classes (large group training) being offered and people have been brainwashed into what "fitness" is supposed to be. Everything is about "weight loss" not so much fat loss. Most want to see the scale instead of looking on the mirror. They don't care if they're skinny fat as long as the scale shows they've lost "weight". They don't care about muscles or gaining them.

When Steve Reeves, Clancy Ross, George Eiferman and John Grimek were Mr America in the 1940s bodybuilders were accused of being muscle bound, vain and maybe gay.

The mirror athlete criticism continued because ordinary people needed an excuse to dismiss these guys who made all other males look bad. Fast forward to now and what

do we find? The public has finally got a real excuse to dismiss professional bodybuilding. Drugs. How can Arnold, a former governor, hold events where the bodybuilders are

not tested for banned substances?

Raphael, Manion and Graham all allow the drugs because they fear the pros would go elsewhere to compete. The future is a nightmare no matter what they do. The public

know musclemen take steroids. Goodness me, as if that is all they take. So they can state that the mirror athletes are fake. Surely they must also be stupid to want to

look like that and have to take all those dangerous drugs!

I would disagree that the public "knows" these bodybuilders are juicing.  Most people are pretty ignorant to the true facts when things like "drug tested" are framed around these events

I bet most people, thing the VAST majority of olympic athletes are clean because of the IOC's stance on drugs and the advertising they do to promote a clean olympics.

Most people believe what they're told
