I only know California prisons. Obviously a dangerous place but people portray prison like as soon as you get there, they give you your bed roll and fuck you up the tailpipe. It's not like that (unless you want it to be).  Keep your head down, don't join a gang and stay out of debt. You'll be fine

A buddy was telling me recently how he was a major target in prison and paid to not get brutally beaten.

Sure he was dangerous, but inside things were much, much different. 

Maurice "Moms" Bouchard is another one that comes to mind...
