I think his comment about hair loss was tongue-in-cheek and not serious. As for a disabled vets mental state, it is hard for the casual observer to assess how bad it is.

My son-in-law is outgoing and congenial most of the time. Put him behind the wheel and it triggers his PTSD bigtime. You can feel the tension in the air when he's driving. He was in some kind of tank when they activated an IED. He was also stationed in Kabul when the mess tent was bombed. Fortunately he was napping and not eating or he might not be here now. He help cart the bodies of his comrades out of that mess tent. He experience many more horrors which he is not ready to discuss with anyone yet. When he gets a migraine which can happen several times a week, nothing the doctors have prescribed has helped. He basically has to go to bed until it passes.

I truly believe you have to have the front line experience to truly understand how is affects many people. Our son-in-law lives with us. We see his pain and suffering first hand, but there is no way we know what he went through to cause it.

Fortunately, there is a lot of support for disabled vets. Unfortunately, it takes work and perseverance to access this support. Some disabled vets don't even try to get help.

I've been to Africa, South America, North America, Asia, Russia, 90% of all countries in Europe, I've spent time in North and South Africa. Same continent, different planets. Traveled extensively in the Antipodes and even done some legwork in China. Hell I've been to Zimbabwe. Imagine that? I've been on safari in Kenya and sat around Bedouin fires in Egypt. And Iceland. Have you been there? I've been as far north as you can go on this planet and as far south. I'm literally, literally, on my 3rd passport now in the last 10 years as my pages kept running out of space for visas or entry/exit stamps.
