40hr work week, good or bad?
« on: April 24, 2015, 04:51:58 PM »
I personally think its a massively outdated concept, unless it was switched to 4 10 hour days, I know in the USA this is pushed further and alot do 7 til 7.

lets be honest most of it is down to appearances and "looking" like you are working. This day and age we have all the tools to work smarter rather than harder but they aren't put in use, so you waste all your prime years traveling to a job, pretending you are doing something for most of the 9-12 hours then going home.

Also why are people proud of the hours they put in per week? Proud they worked 60 hours as a corporate slave, with no time for recreation, like its some badge of honour.Getting paid per hour is a fools gold, I did one full time job getting paid by the hour and realised it was a huge waste of time and resources, time is your most precious gift.

I switched straight away to working on something that would make me money over and over, with time not even entering in to the equation. The second you start thinking about work as what you can produce that will continue to earn you money long after you stopped working on it, rather than a paid per hour scheme, the sooner you will liberate yourself and your mind.

I did 7 12s in Kuwait. Not bad when you're the boss, but it does suck after a while

Money!

 ???

Yes, but I'm assuming you picked this job above others, correct? Can I also assume you get paid per hour?

I work 80-90 hours a week. Not much time for anything else, but the money is really good.

It's short term for me. I'm close to retiring. My house and cars are paid for. Just stashing away some extra cash before I retire.

Can I ask you what you define as "short term"? I've heard people use this to describe a period of 20 years.

if u work 80-90 hours, then you would expect to be earning at least 2 weeks worth, every week.

so, if you earn , say, $100k working 38 hours per week, then if you do 80-90, you'd want at least $200k, right?

what im getting at is- its not really "good money", if all you are getting paid for is average money, but working loads of hours.

thats not good money, thats just lots of work...like someone having 2 jobs...both pay average.

Exactly.People lose all capability of logical thought when it comes to challenging societal norms, Ive seen otherwise very intelligent people in some really shitty jobs, working stupid hours, all because they never challenged what they had been told was the norm.

I've been on this schedule for about a year. Plan to work one or two more years. I'm 51. Make $3500/week on 80 hours and $4000/week on 90. My 40hr check is $1300.

I do 50 hours a week On a 40 hour contract.

Huge company and they refused to pay overtime to anyone on salary.

A bunch of us told the director to get fucked and now we get double time after 40. I won't be getting a promotion any time soon, but it was worth it  8)

Difference is Vince still has to supplement with a minimum wage job to get by, while I retired long ago.

I worked 5 eight hour days a week. I worked 4 ten hour days a week and 3 twelve hour days a week that was set up with an over lap 12 day during the month.

My findings for myself. 8 hours days are so short. It seems the time flies by but you have to come in for 5 days and that stinks. The four day was the best. Three days off was gold.  12 hour days was ridiculous. If the job is over an hour away you only have 2 hours a day to yourself. I hated 12 hour days. Some guys loved the time off.

I work salary these days...not hourly..children and broke bastards work hourly...I show up and work maybe 28 hours a week...I feel that's pushing it....I'm just waiting to quit and become a full time BBQ competition competitor lol

I have no passion for it anymore...just want to compete in BBQ and have a family...yes, i know its a lofty dream!

80-90hrs a week?

Enjoy your burnout to come...

At that rate, you have 0 time to cook your own food, clean your own clothes, so the extra money you make is lost to have people do that for you.

The lack of sleep, bad eating and overworking can only lead to one thing.

4 days on, 4 days off is one of the best shift patterns going. 12 hour shifts x4 then 4 days off. It works out roughly the same yearly as doing 40 hour weeks.

Only downside is you have no fixed days off during the week and you're working a lot of weekends. But when you factor in being able to take 4 days annual leave multiple times a year, which basically gives you 12 straight days off. Great for taking holidays and travelling

The other shift pattern which works well is working early mornings. 6am to 3pm etc. Lots of time to enjoy your evenings. You get used to the early mornings  and sleeping 6 hours a night rather then 8. In fact you'll probably feel better for it.

Still nothing beats working for yourself.

enjoy your evenings? NOt when you gotta be in bed before 9pm, lol... 6 hours of sleep would destroy me, would never get used to that.

Go bed at 11pm and wake up at 5am. It's the quality of the sleep that counts and 6 hours is plenty. You do end up catching up on it on the weekend though. They'll be a day when you sleep 12 hours straight.
