I don't think you can refer to it as "you don't see that anymore" seeing there is probably only 2-3 players of all time who could do that 2 of them being Jordan and Kareem
There's been quite a few actually (led the league in PPG while shooting 50% or better), although not very many recently:
- Kevin Durant (2014)
- Shaq (1995, 2000)
- Jordan (1988-1992)
- David Robinson (1994)
- Bernard King (1985)
- Adrian Dantley (1981, 1984)
- Alex English (1983)
- George Gervin (1978-1980, 1982)
- Bob McAdoo (1974, 1975)
- Kareem (1971, 1972)
- Oscar Robertson (1968)
- Wilt (1961-1966)
The "Season Finder" tool on basketball-reference.com is really helpful/cool for stuff like this.
So in the 57 seasons since 1960, the scoring leader has shot at least 50% in 28 of those seasons, by 12 different players. If you throw in guys who were really close (49% and up) then nearly everyone from 1960-1995 did it. It's a fairly recently phenomenon that the scoring leader usually shoots well under 50%. I imagine this is because players take a lot more three-pointers now than they used to, and because offenses are more perimeter-oriented now as a result (not many teams with a big low-post player as their primary scorer).
Jordan is certainly the most recent to do it consistently, although I didn't realize Kevin Durant led the league in scoring in four of the past six seasons. That Heeb can score. He also shot very near 50% in all of those seasons.
