Boxing began as "prize fighting" and the name of the game has always been making $$ by putting on a fight.
Some great fighters with charisma along with a long parade of characters like Don King are the real side of boxing.
Cashing in on hyped up matchups is what made the sport then as today.

For example, the epic Alli vs Frazier bouts of the 1970's were what Pacman vs Mayweather is now.

except the latter was anything but epic.

Boxing is a great sport, but will always suffer from an overall lack of talent as it isn't a sport that a lot kids (especially in the states) grow up doing.  It is a sport born from minorities and countries with less focus on the popular more accessible sports.  Boxing is my favorite sport to watch, and I will never say it's dead, but it has declined sufficiently over the last 20 years.  In my opinion, boxing needs these things to come alive again:

1. A dangerous, heavy hitting, charasmatic heavyweight that competes in a competitive heavyweight division.
2. A waspy white guy above 140lbs that the casual sports fan can relate to and rally behind.

These things will generate interest, as there will always be fighters willing to put themselves on the line in the ring, and that in itself will always be intriguing.

Unfortunately, the future looks bleak on those levels at this point. Boxing will always be the gentleman's sport, and all it takes is a huge fight to generate interest (like last weekend) but overall, Mayweather's style coupled with Pac's inability to cope probably shewed fans away a bit.

One guy in the match was 38 years old and the other was 36 years old. Vlad is damn near 40.

All 3 of those guys will be gone in a few short years.

It was a great PPV success, no question about it but who brings in those numbers in 3 or 4 short years?

they said that about tyson, chavez sr, holyfield ect there will always be someone else to replace them. floyd is the most boring fighter
in the world yet he earned 100mill and sold over 3 mill ppv setting a record.

im hoping because of this fight black americans leave NFL and NBA and switch there talents to boxing then we will see the rebirth of american boxing

a white heavyweight american champ would not only resurrect boxing he would break all the records floyd has set. then again last white heavyweight champion was gene tunney and that was 100 years ago  ;D

Ah, the good old "boxing is dead" threads - usually written by fags who think they're suddenly hard because they have put on their Tapout t-shirt.

MMA is shite to watch and when it's good it's because someone lands a shot, not rolling around on the floor - and not one of their top guys would scrape the 100 richest athletes.

How many A-listers are seated next to a cage fight? none.

If boxing left Vegas, how would it affect the city? would MMA hold it together? would it bollocks.

Tell me how boxing is not as good as you remember it, tell me how in your bygone era you preferred this fighter or that - I can see your point - but dont ever tell me MMA is doing the damage, because it's gay and followed by gays.
