It was Paul Tagliabue.  Goodell didn't become commish until 2006

I said it with spygate, I said it with deflategate....

Pats have probably gotten away with 98% of the cheating they've done.  You don't just engage in spygate an deflategate, you get caught for spygate and deflategate.  They'll still laughing at all of the little sneaks and cheats we'll never hear about - these are just the ones they were unlucky enough to get caught.  if you offered $1mil for every other instance of cheating with pats, and demanded proof, we'd have ten more spygates on our hards, and all with proof too.

Now, is this just the NFL trying to save face, saying "I told you so" about 36 hours before Pats start the season?  Of course.

But it's beyond undeniable now... pats are some long-term cheaters... no debate.

Cheating in professional sports? Good heavens, next thing you know they'll be saying professional bodybuilders use anabolic steroids.

I'm tired of this whole Goodell/Patriots pissing match.
I'm ready for kickoff on Thursday. Put all this meaningless drama in the garbage.

The Cheatriot Way.  No wonder the other owners are so fed up with them.

I guess Goodell loves losing because now Kraft is gonna take him to court to get his picks and million bucks back.

The fans, on the whole, are insufferable.  I live in the middle of it, and it's like nothing you've ever seen.

I have plenty of friends up here who are good, knowledgeable fans.  In fact body88 who used to post here was a diehard Pats/Sox fan, and he was one of the best ever here.  But I'm talking overall.  It's almost impossible to describe.

I lived in MA for five years, agree completely.

I can give a great example, this was in 2011 I think, the Celtics had bought and paid for their first NBA title in decades a few years earlier and were on the decline again, and this guy called in to WEEI in complete seriousness and said he thinks the Celtics needed to trade Paul Pierce for Dwight Howard.  He was completely serious and thought that Orlando would seriously consider giving up Dwight, who was like a Top 3 player at the time and the hottest free agency commodity in the league aside from LeBron himself, for a 33-year-old Pierce, straight up.

You see this a lot among your average Boston sports fan where they think the best player on their team is automatically among the best in the league because...they play for Boston, I guess?

Hey, they may have cheated but at least they didn't hurt the integrity of the game by having any players that used steroids.  We all know that no one on the Patriots have ever used PEDs to cheat the game. ::)

Good example.  Antother:  When the Rivera retirement tour was in full effect (not at his request, mind you...the other teams just did this) the Boston version was more about the 2004 Red Sox.......

Sox fan called in and said "it's no biggie, I'm sure the Yankees will take a few jabs when Ortiz does his tour".........

His tour?  David Ortiz? bwahahahahahahahahahahha h.  They are delusional.

That's why they defend this stuff so much - they think their team is SO magical and incredible, that everyone else feels that way.  When they see most of the country feels, in fact, the opposite, they lose their shit?

You guys act like Boston is the only town with homers. I know that we have a special kind of "see no evil", down-Southie dumbass homer, but I take it you two have never been down to Louisiana to talk to Saints fans? Also, don't even get me started about Alabama college football...

Goodell was on Mike and Mike talking about how him and Kraft are still best of friends , while mumbling and stumbling his words the entire interview

lol @ the David Ortiz retirement tour :D

Yes you see this a lot too (the bolded bit), like the whole "They hate us cuz they ain't us" bit, no actually the rest of the country has no desire to be like your cheating despicable team.

This is a straw man (another common Boston fan arguing tactic), of course there are delusional homer fans of every team in every sport but the Boston breed is a special variety of insufferable homer.  Sort of like how every teams tapes signals, radio-jams on-field communications, steals play scripts, and deflates footballs, even though only the Patriots evidently do these things poorly enough to get caught.

I assure you on Chicago sports radio people aren't calling in with suggestions that the Bulls ought to think about trading Derrick Rose for Anthony Davis.

Just curious where all the Patriots fans were hiding before 2001 and where they'll all be hiding in 3-4 years when brady and Bellicheck both leave the team.

Other towns don't have a "State of the empire" segment to obsess about another team after their team's recap.  I've lived in different states - there's nothing like this up here.

Interesting: you offer broad, sweeping, over-generalizations about legions of fans across 4 major pro sports leagues and when I present a counter-factual, I am the one with the "straw man". Perhaps I will get you a dictionary for Christmas.

Will they be retiring or just finally banned for good from the league?

For the most part, I get my sports news from 98.5 and those guys are almost all brutal to the teams and especially to the homers (Zo aside). And Mazz is probably the single most straight-up baseball guy I've ever listened to.

Plenty of debate... "Anonymous sources", we just saw how that failed (ESPN and NFL) with apologies from Peter King, ESPN, etc for false info.

And it just comes out now? (These anonymous sources) ??

 ???

Grape Ape and I are offering a (correct) generalization about Boston sports fans.  You then reply with a "Well you guys are acting like no other teams have homers", which is (i) obviously false, (ii) not something we said, (iii) easy for you to shoot down, and (iv) does not argue against our original contention that Boston fans are a special breed of insufferable homer.  In other words the very definition of a Straw Man.

Who's the one who needs a dictionary again?

I believe that I copped to the "special breed of homer" for Boston in my original response (see "special kind of "see no evil", down-Southie dumbass homer") but we are not alone with dumbass homers. Your contention is that there are MORE of them (or perhaps more as a ratio of pop density) with which I contend. While that might be true, your facts to support that contention are missing.

Objection overruled.

Here you go again.  Find the quote where either of us said either of these things.

This is just another version of the "every team does it" defense, or that guy in the NBA thread who makes up fantasy scenarios he thinks LeBron would win at in order to prove he's better than Jordan.

If you agree with what we're saying then stop getting your panties in a bunch about it.

It is nice that you withdrew your incorrect contention that I don't know what "Straw Man" means though.

Steelers, Cowboys, SF, Giants and Green Bay fans are most definitely not jealous.
