I am managing to take at least one body part exercise routine off every so often....at least it hasn't always been the same muscle group. Tonight I should have worked my back, but I did not make it to the gym because of a series of events.
About the time I would usually head out for my workout, I was held up on the phone dealing with the contractor for my recent replacement gutter purchase which has resulted in some issues I demand be resolved by them. I mean "fuck it" after spending nearly $9,000 on new gutters they should look perfect and they don't. And yes, cross me and I can be a real asshole to deal with as the contractor found out today.
The second disruption is more welcome. Our daughter, son-in-law, grandson and their two dogs are in town for my son-in-law's grandmother's funeral next Friday (note: too many funerals lately). Anyway they are staying with us and my daughter decided to fix all of us dinner tonight. They like to eat early which also resulted in my usual window of opportunity for my workout being further cut away. I did make good use to the time though, I got some much needed yard work done.
I am down with it though. Life is all about maintaining balance. If I miss a day here or there not going to the gym, I will still survive and maybe even progress in the long run. And dinner was very healthy fare. My daughter is a vegetarian. We had soup with very little chicken in it, a great salad and terrific rolls....oh and a few glasses of a really tasty wine.
So I have a question, which always occurs to me when I miss a day at the gym; is it better to skip the routine I would have done and stay on schedule or is it better to do the routine which will put me off schedule? I've tried both. Here is what I have concluded, if I miss working out a particular muscle group, there is always next week as opposed to when I try to stay to the routine, every day I spend catching up feels like I am punishing myself for skipping that one day....which is very negative. Often I end up pooping out and missing a day and a part of my routine anyway, even if it is several days later.
I know what you all are thinking too, the fellow is retired, he doesn't even have to work, what the heck is his problem? I am with you on this except to say that when we get older, there is a reason we retire if we can. That reason is that we simply don't have the same energy levels we once did.
How's that for a lesson in being "mature" and one I bet you don't want to know about, since most all of you are young enough to be my children.
