X2...all the best Jay. I had an op like you on my right knee in 99.. my cartilage. can squat like a king now... ;D

Damn, I hope I can get back to squatting. My flat ass is going to be even flatter if I don't do something. Oh and there are those lunges too. Genetics! My mom had a flat butt. Thanks mom.

Took a pain pill last night right before hitting the sack. I don't think I needed it. My knee still feels pain free this morning. It is going to be difficult to remember to not put weight on it. The crutches are so limiting. How does one carry something while navigating around on crutches? I tried peeing while leaning on them and peed over the side of the toilet (real coordinated). Now I am setting them against the wall so I can hold onto my (giant) dick and aim when I pee. Just thought you all would get a kick out of my bathroom habits.  ;D

Why do you squat in the Smith machine?

Not speaking for Chaos, but I prefer an assisted squat. I can concentrate on getting really low and on my form. I like the Smith machine for this. The gym also has a squat machine that works in an arch. It takes getting used to, but once you do the movement is great. I use a low stool to squat to because it assures me I am getting really low. I am careful not to bounce off it though, just barely touching it at the bottom of the squat.

This arch machine is great also for standing overhead presses. You are pressing up and forward some. Because you can hook off the weight at any point, it gives you the confidence to lift heavier weights.

I like the Change and having my feet a bit more Forward. I do find front squats work well too in the Smith machine. I squat with and without a Smith machine also i like to do leg press now and again. Being more radical i will do adduction and abduction too on seated machines we have. I will use any means at Hand to get the Job done..i never fuck around when i Train, not even talking much...alone with my thoughts and working hard and fast ;)

A curved smith or an angled one?

It would be curved I think. The outer part of the rack is in an arch which corresponds to the pivot of the weight bar. This is the part with the pins for racking the weight wherever you need to. The interesting thing is that when squatting, it works best, for me at least, to stand with my feet somewhat forward causing me to lean backward slightly at the top of the movement. In full squat, I am bent very slightly forward at the waist as would be expected and my back is in perfect position with butt out tapping the low stool I set there to gauge how low I go.

I am out of commission for probably a month because I just had knee surgery yesterday and have been told not to bear any weight on my right leg for a month. I should be able to develop some upper body strength using these damn crutches. My arm pits are already sore. Anyway, when I get back to the gym, I will snap a photo of this equipment so you can see what it looks like....which is probably better then my description.

Our daughter called today to ask if we'd be offended if she came up from Texas to help out for the next month while I am laid up. Offended? Hardly. I paid for the plane ticket and she arrives tomorrow evening.

What a pathetic couple of old coots my wife and I are. My wife has fallen twice so far today. She cannot usually right herself when she falls, but somehow managed to do so when she fell the first time this morning. The second time though she just lay on the floor in front of me and there was no way she was going to make it upright again. I debated calling 911, but decided I would lift her up myself despite her objections. I think I managed this without putting pressure on my right leg somehow. I need to let my knee heal right because it is clear one of us has to be able bodied around here and that person is me.

Thank goodness for children who care enough to put their lives on hold for their parents.

I just read about the surgery I had last Friday. Some of the information is less than encouraging. I will have a lot of questions for the doctor when I see him on September 17.

I had coronary artery bypass surgery ten years ago, the kind where they split your breastbone to get at your heart, and then wire the bones together when they're done.  The bones are supposed to fuse after some time.

Does anyone here have information/experiences about this situation that can be shared on this thread, concerning exercises like bench presses, dips, and push-ups?  Is the healed breastbone strong enough?

Thank you.

If I were in your shoes, this is not where I would go for advice on this. You need a professional opinion and by that I mean your doctor.

It sure seems possible that the breast plate would fuse together again after some time. It might even be stronger than it was before the surgery, I don't know and neither does anyone else here probably. Once you have your doctor's consent, you will know you are good to go and that should be a comfort to you.

Obviously, exercise is good for the heart as long as your heart isn't overtaxed by it.

Check out this dudes thighs. He's got really short powerful legs and glutes. Not all of this muscle is from cycling. He squats with mass weights too.

I am going to buy a rack for my bicycle so I can use it as a stationary bike and then I will peddle my ass off....or back on as the case may be.

I am currently doing 10 leg raises per leg each hour I am awake and 10 leg extensions. No added weight though.
