Ahhhhh...Back and chest today.  As usual it was primarily done with machines.  So, that begs the question (and allows me to shame myself with the weight I use!):

What are the actual weights lifted on these things?  I think it is at most half what is shown on the weight stack.  I cannot comfortably bench press 135 right now on a real bench as it just hurts too damn much and I will get stuck under the pain of the weight but can use a machine bench and get ten wussified reps with a listed 100 lbs.

I am guessing it is an actual 50 lbs. I am lifting, maybe less.  It is both humbling and humiliating to admit to a poundage like this but honesty is what's needed here.  Dammit!  ;D  I was never much of a bench presser but could do leg work like  few others I knew.  I use machines for shoulders, back, arms...sheesh!  Pretty much my entire body except for my legs of which one is permanently teensie weensie from injury so I no longer train them as I don't want to look like a human fiddler crab.   ;D

Anybody here know what these machines (on average) actually have you lifting?  Half their listed weight. Less? More?  Who knows?

I am such a wimp, I know.   ;D

I hope the weights aren't half what is shown on the stack. Frankly, it probably depends on the machine. Some machines actually weigh something with no added weight. This depends on how they are balanced. most Nautilus machines are probably weightless until you stick a pin in the stack. At the gym there is a Nautilus dip machine that actually subtracts from your bodyweight. This machine is indeed lighter. Some Hammer machines have weight before you add plates to them. The Hammer hack squat for example has machine weight.

Most of the back and chest Hammer Strength machines are pretty well balanced. I think the weight is whatever you add to the machine. Because of the lever action, which allows that you do not have to work against gravity in the case of some back and chest machines, the weight resistance is probably lighter.

Personally, I think it matters not how much weight you lift as long as you are exerting yourself and increasing your strength and endurance. Form is everything in my book. Machines often require that you use good form which is a bonus. I've seen my share of people doing sloppy lifting with too heavy weights. Not only is this probably not very productive, it is dangerous. This is how folks get injuries.

i agree with you. As long as your muscles are being taxed it will work. If i could not do a pressing exercise(with free weights) i would use a machine. if i could not squat i would leg press and not worry too much. some machines like Jay mentioned namely hammer are excellent for back and chest workouts and shoulders. mix Some Dumbbell work in their or cables as long as you get the job done.

Tonight Back..

Wide grip pulldowns 3/4 sets
close grip pulldowns 3/4 sets
BB rows 3/4 sets
BB pullovers 3/4 sets

lower back i worked last night with legs. cardio cross trainer and will finish with some machine crunches 2-3 sets.

Speaking of drinking. It is now week two and day 13 with no alcohol. I think about having a drink occasionally, but there is no real craving. So far, so good. Probably the drink I miss most is wine, but I want to be sure I am completely over the habit of drinking before having a glass of wine. Aside from the fact that I've had a cold for the last week, I feel great!

For cardio I run 2 to 5 miles usually on off lifting days. I just started doing quarter mile intervals for a change. I use to be a decent sprinter in my younger years. I just finished almost 2 weeks of intervals. The fastest I do the quarter miles is a little under a 6 minute mile pace (10.1 MPH). The slowest an eight minute mile pace (7.5 MPH). Yesterday I felt a slight pull on one hamstring. I guess I'm back to doing 2 to 5 mile runs for awhile.

I found the hard 400 meter/one lap intervals made me lose fat at an really fast rate. It's also a brutal way to train. I run a quarter mile then I walk for a 200 meter rest interval. It's the high intensity of running. It not easy. Most bodybuilders will do something like 40 yard repeats. I really think it's best for fat loss to keep it a something like 6 x 800 or 8 x 400.  The rest interval for the half mile repeats can be a 400 meter super slow jog or fast walk.  For the 400 do a 200 meter fast walk or slow jog.

I'm going to keep mixing up the intervals and the normal distance running for cardio. It's been so long that I did intervals more than once week and I really saw a quick fat loss. As long as I'm healthy I'm going to keep doing it.

Interval are very hard on the heart muscle because it really red lines the tach so too speak. For us older guys it can be dangerous so make sure the doctor gives the okay. It also can be hard on the joints. I remember a member of this board decided to include 40 yard sprints and snapped his Achilles tendon.

I'll let you know how my progress goes putting intervals back in the mix for fat loss. I just have to stay healthy regarding joints and muscles. Going to back off the poundage in lifting so I have the energy for these running workouts.

Anyway these are my thoughts on cardio for fat loss. I know most steroid monsters do ultra slow walking for cardio. Seems like a waste of time but seems to work for drug guys. Now fast walking is another story. It's effective.

Have not trained since early Wednesday morning as i was quite sore.  Just finished a quickie workout in my dinky garage gym of the following.

One set each for 50 reps.

Lat pulldowns.
Machine Bench Presses.

BB curls w/2" bar.
Tricep pushdowns.

Wrist Roller both directions until I could not do it.

I don't have a shoulder press machine and BB or DB presses just hurt too much so that will have to wait until Monday  morning at work in that gym.
My vertical machine bench puts some strain on my wrists with the angle (the right hurts more than the left) so I just pay attention to that aspect of training at home.  I might go back out later on and do some DB laterals with standard diameter handles vs the 2" ones as I just remembered i could do those instead of presses. ;D  I will also knock out a bunch of Roman Chair style sit-ups at that time.

The dieting process is going well and I have established a cheat day on Sunday wherein I will eat more carbs than I normally do.  Currently eating around 2,500 or so calories per day as opposed to approx 4,500 or more.  I am hoping for a more muscular physique vs the perma-bulker look I've allowed my ego to carry around for more years than I care to count up. Bodyweight is down 36 pounds to 192 with a body fat of 19.5% being down from  24.5%.  Still fluffy after all these years.  ;D

My new leg brace will be fitted to me on 10/10 so I am excited about that.  Not a big deal when I see people without a leg or worse but its something for me to be happy about as it will help stabilize me when I walk.  Nothing like a semi-buff old dude falling in an Olive Garden on the way to being seated to make his family not want to be seen in public with him!

Keep training, gentlemen.

i try and staying lean on top of it and still staying progressively strong proves that bulking or training heavy means nothing,,you can be lean and just as strong if i gained 10/15lbs i don't think my strenght would be that off the charts better,,,
