Shabazz - too many times to count.  bat eared midget who is a perfect example of the karma bus coming around the corner at 90mph

Jonathan Rowe - great dude.  Lots of times, usually with Shabazz.  Could have been a damn amazing 212 guy, but loved motorcycles too much, by loving I mean "wrecking".

Between the accidents and his friendship with the seedy ass Rashid, I am surprised the guy could even afford food to go in his mouth.

Did Shabazz Rashid steal his friends money?

Are you in south FL? I remember always seeing Paul Baker and Kenny Jones at the World Gym in Fort Lauderdale. I also know that Bill Wilmore is around the Palm Beach area I believe as well as Darrem Charles in Boca

Paul is now at LA Fitness.  Used to train with him at Golds until they brought in all the stupid Hoist equipment or whatever brand it is that the seat and machine moves with you when you use it.   We went to Worlds and then it went in the gutter over a year ago.  At LA Fitness now.

*Note :  Golds in Ft Lauderdale is now ZOO Gym

Was with Bill down in Hollywood once at Golds.  No idea where he is or lives now.  Taylor at Golds and then LA Fitness.  He lives about 20 mins away in Pembroke Pines (as of last year)

Darrem at the Golds in Ft Lauderdale.  Though he lives north of here.

Kenny Jones used to be in Ft Lauderdale.  He just up and disappeared a few years ago.  Dude was a jack of all trades apparently.  He ran ads in magazines and newspapers for - and not limited to -

muscle worship and posing sessions
personal training and diet

The first two were a pretty much given as anyone can guess.  The rest of his "expertise" was :

Installing tile and general handyman work
Teaching sunrise yoga on the beach (he actually got a big crowd of about 20-30 people for this before he fucked it up.  They would gather at the beach on A1A and Sunrise before dawn)
Cooking classes
Carpet cleaning / rug beating
Vehicle detailing
motorcycle for beginners
guitar lessons
bartender
life coach
moving services
body guard

Training wise, he was more into the metaphysical and La-La stuff than Kai could ever dream of.  Dude used more gear than anyone I have ever known despite his small stature and size.  Now I don't mean he used more than everyone out there, but out of the ones whose gear use I can verify 100%, he was way above them.  Paul weighs 300lbs with abs and he never used 1/3 of what Kenny used.

Haha yeah I trained at that World back in the early 2000s. It was a great gym before it got really fruity. Speaking of fruity, Kenny always gave me that vibe although I never met the guy. I just remember him being eccentric. My buddy said he once yelled at the girl working the front desk telling her to turn the ceiling fans down because he didn't want to tear his biceps. Paul Baker was huge and used to hang by the front eating Burger King. Nice guy

I trained with Branch Warren about 8 years ago.  He was training back and i knew the guy working out with him, so they let me train with them.  He was really cool and laid back, not as uptight as i thought based on his videos.  The training was very different than his videos, everything was slow and controlled.  He only went up to like 255 on BB rows.  Not what i expected based on what i had seen in videos, but he was very strong and trained with an intense focus.  None of the screaming or slamming weights.  Branch was huge on weighted chins, he was very persistant that we do chins in place of pulldowns.  He did like 8 sets of chins.

I've trained with several professional power lifters and olympic lifters over the years.  I could tell a lot of crazy stories about training with power lifters, those guys are nuts.

With so much experience with so many pros, what was so fascinating about Haney and Taylor's insider secrets?

Their "secrets" were that there were no secrets.  Just common sense really.  I asked Taylor once about his reputation for being a lazy trainer (and trust me, if you ever saw him training you would think he was lazy or just doing three hours of warm ups) and he said he trained that way because that is all he had to do.  Why do more?  Haney had pretty much the same outlook.  He trained harder than Taylor but when I asked him about the Mentzer or Yates way of training with high intensity, he simply asked me "why?"  He said he could train that way and stimulate the muscle with the forced reps and negatives but the risk of injury was a lot higher with this method or he could simply do a few more sets up to failure and keep it a lot safer than trying to go beyond failure every time and risk getting hurt.

Both of them pretty much agreed that the getting big wasn't hard, it was just that most trainees over complicated things by doing too much in the gym and not enough in the diet.  They were too busy looking for a magic exercise or secret stack that would make all the difference.

Good.  He is very laid back and easy to get along with.  Trains hard too.  Mostly a 70/30 in favor of machines.  He is one of these people that believe any exercise will work the muscle if you do it correctly.  He is one of the few who can say they never do the same workout twice and actually mean it.

Wow!!

Bev Francis when she was powerlifting, John Hnatyschak and Jeff King is all I can remember. Benched with Ted Arcidi but he does't count in this thread.

Jeff could have won today with no GH or slin.

I assume your talking about Jeff and he was and is a great guy!  His knowledge of diet etc was ahead of his time and he trained like an animal with basic compound movements.

You remember this thread.
