Strength training for upcoming MMA tournament
« on: July 02, 2015, 02:44:36 PM »
I've been approached to do the strength training for an MMA fighter who will be competing in September at a local promotion. I've got him on a basic Starting Strength linear gains program. I will also be writing up a new diet for him this evening. Should be interesting.

Increase the weight slightly over time. Seems like something you'd need a trainer for just in case you forget to increase the weight.

thats awesome man.  What promotion is it?  How do you plan on breaking up the exercises?  I always thought it is good to stick with basics for weights...ie bench, squats, deads, lat pulls.  The  the rest being bodyweight and conditioning exercises.  The weight classes in fight sports are nice because usually tons of bulking isn't needed.

"lat pulls"? Not sure what you're talking about. I put him on Starting Strength. Probably best for some of you guys to not add uninformed opinion into the mix.

Make sure you incorporate some tire fighting/wrestling in your routine .   :D

I keep my guys strictly focused on The Big Three powerlifts, then introduce power cleans after 21 days. No tires, ropes, and all that nonsense.

What fuckin good is bench press for MMA, unless you re one of those who think anyone who can push up four wheels a side is automatically a bad ass. CLOSE GRIP bench maybe, regular no.

I think if I were that close to a fight, at this stage, I'd be transitioning into more explosive work than pure strength.

It would be composed of the 3 major lifts (as well as military), but it'd be more focussed on functional power to use in a fight.

I don't know if starting strength caters to that - just thinking about what I would do compared to what I do now, which is more conventional powerlifting programs with progressive overloads.  I couldn't imagine training for a fight, close to the event and being sore as fuck from doing big deads etc.

Coach would know - but it will come with a barrage of people needling him over the success of his athletes :)

The mechanics of a punch are fairly analogous to a bench press, no?

I think I'd be tempted to single arm db presses, though.

I see you don't know much about this sort of thing. And that's alright.

Well, I'm probably a little different to your athlete in that I'm quite strong and can't fight to save myself, so I sure as fuck wouldn't be pulling big numbers in the gym, fucking up the fight training that I would desperately need ;D

Maybe have the program revolve around the close grip bench, front squat ad deadlift. Full body split, linear progression sounds good. Would also work in some plyos/grip work as part of the warm up, extra core work at the end couldn't hurt either.

Bulking?.... Weight classes are about dieting, being as tight as possible to gain an advantage, unless your a heavy, those tight mma shorts show them up for the fat pigs they are

Making weight isn't an issue with this guy. I'm doing his diet for him. He will actually build muscle and lose weight simultaneously. My main focus is bringing his squat numbers up.

Weightlifting has no place in MMA. Post pics of every UFC champ for further proof.

Yes, ask Strawman. Like Walter he can tell you how to train your fighter.

Cooch, even an absolute total retard like Wiggs could train a guy to get knocked out in the first round.

The next smart personal trainer I meet will be the first.
