Do you limit your salt intake?
« on: September 02, 2015, 01:03:13 PM »
I used to, but I've been convinced that there's really no point. The evidence of the dangers of salt is specious and inconclusive. There is much more proof that sugar is harmful, but the powerful sugar lobby has actually helped to obfuscate such evidence and demonize salt.

I am pretty sure that the medical establishment has rescinded their fatwa against salt basically admitting that the "science" around the "studies" that caused them to link sodium with high BP were spectacularly flawed.

Its a good idea to limit sodium when on gear purely from water retention and blood pressure point of view but not much real point if natty so long as you are not taking spoonfull of the stuff.
You are completely right in your assesment that sugar is more harmful than anything else.

No. If I had high bp and my doc told me to then yes I would limit it.

The medical establishment isn't that monolithic. There have been a few well-publicized studies that have gone counter to what was considered conventional wisdom about salt, but there still seems to be a lot of controversy. I just checked the American Heart Association website and they still recommend limited salt intake.

When I was in college, remember reading a story about a young man who had died because he consumed nothing but packaged ramen for years on end. This had a huge impact on how I thought about sodium consumption. This was printed in a reputable news source. Once I realized it was probably just an urban legend, I started to change my thinking on sodium.

I don't add sauces to meat other than ketchup as they really have lots of sodium. Any frozen food (meat wise) will be loaded with sodium. At one point I was not watching my intake and a quick blood pressure reading had me make a few changes for the better.

I also feel better with less salt. When I was in Texas I ate at a PF Changs and felt like crap after.  Maybe is was the Mai Tai because I almost never drink.

Having more salt in your body will help the kidneys to hold on to more water. Also the more salt you take in, the thirstier you will get. When you feel thirsty, drink water. Bars know what salt does to the body and that's why they'll have extra salty pretzels or peanuts on the counter. Eat the salty pretzels and you will order more drinks...

Interdasting. Were you working out regularly at the time? Appearance-wise, did you look healthy? Were you noticeably "fit"?  Was the reading, like, alarming or was it just higher than you would have liked?

Been training since the age of 11-12, so I will have to answer "yes" if I was "working out"

What do you mean by "fit" and what's with all these super gay terms???

I think the highest reading I got was 160/??? but was often in the 150ish range/never remember the second number, lol...

Post workout cardio fixed it quick and stopped eating the frozen burger patties. Those are very high in sodium. Then, I'd put kraft bbq sauce and ketchup, shit man... Not good!

Nothing wrong with moderate salt consumption, athletes usually need a bit more than others anyways. I prefer my natural raw salt though over that white crap.

"Fit" is a super gay term? And I used other super gay terms???

When I said "fit" I meant obvious that you worked out just by looking at you. I think physical appearance is a good indicator of overall health. There are exceptions of course. A guy using sterons might look great but have shitty insides. A woman might have an eating disorder and fuck up her organs, but if your workouts aren't enhanced and your weight doesn't fluctuate wildly, it's surprising to me that your food intake would affect your bp so much.

I was up to 230-238 when eating like that, but not lean, didn't look fat, just by bb'ing standards. Face never gets chubby so I could hold a shit tonne of fat and not appear "unfit" lol..

No.

I'm always told it can be bad for your blood pressure.  Well, I always had hypertension (130-150 / 90, hereditary) until I lost weight.  Now I eat more salt than ever and my blood pressure is consistently about 95/70.  I load all of my meat and veggies with salt.

This is what I'm getting at. I think appearance is probably a pretty accurate way to gauge your health. It's pretty unlikely to have abs, clear skin, nice teeth and hypertension.

My wife brines chicken before she bakes it. Brining is basically marinating a piece of meat in a salt bath. At one point, I  avoided brined meats because I thought they were taking years off my life. I regret all of the delicious meals I missed out on.
