This reminds me of the saying "there are no atheists in foxholes". While I have never been i a foxhole or even in the military, I have had some situations where death was possible and at no point did I question my atheism.

The "there are no atheists in foxholes" statement simply isn't true.  Some folks have hardened themselves so completely against God that nothing will change them....not even death.

My dad hit me when I was young and the resentment stayed for many years. It's only now in his advanced age that we are truly on good terms.

No one is perfect. You may never be able to fully let go of the anger and resentment. But you can do what is right for now, because you are a better man. And I'm sure deep down, your dad recalls how unfair he was.
