I dont buy it bro. If you get shredded on 2k calories keto...u will also getbshredded on 2k calories mixed diet.

Fair enough. I agree you can get shredded eating pretty much anything as long as you're getting your protein requirements in. I'm CONSTANTLY hungry, though. So eating keto keeps me from overeating because I feel fuller longer. Fats jive well with me and keep me from binging. I don't ever crave carbs, so this diet clearly works pretty well for me. But, again, to each their own. If you can handle not getting super hungry eating rice and chicken breast, more power to ya!

thong warrior, how long did you try keto for?

from what i've been reading, it seems like even 3 weeks might not necessarily be long enough to "adapt"... maybe at least a month to be safe?

wannabepro, what are your meals like on keto?  i just keep envisioning a bunch of meat and oil with some greens.  i don't necessarily mind eating like that, but it seems like the cooking and prep would be pretty hard.

To be considered KETO you can't have any cheat meals.  It takes a while of no carbs to hit ketosis.  By eating carbs on weekends you'll never achieve it.  You are mistaking keto with carb cycling.

Watch out on those digestive enzymes.  Not only do they break food down, they do the same to your stomach lining.

I've been reading Lyle McDonald's The Ketogenic Diet.  I think he would disagree with your claim, but I haven't read enough yet to say why exactly.  In short though, there are a number of ways to get your body to start producing enough ketone bodies to survive on... it's not so cut and dry.

Believing any supplement actually contributes in any significant aspect to the way an IFBB looks.

I didn't believe Cell Tech would give me a 400% increase bench, but I also did not doubt that some supplements probably helped.

Had no idea the incredible impact drugs make... just look at these guys deflating nowadays.

Ketosis is not the body's natural state. It's a starvation response. That's why you get "kicked out" of it so easily. It's because the brain prefers glucose.

Moreover, it's not the Ketosis that makes you lose weight. It's the not eating which, then, causes the Ketosis to kick in.

For some reason, basic nutrition often, needlessly, gets taken to extremes. So, "limiting carbs," turns into "no carbs."

the "reason" is that we're on a bodybuilding board.  people want to get as lean and muscular as possible.  i've heard enough stories of people using ketosis to improve both body composition and mental state to be curious about it.

That's funny Wes, for me it works (probably we have very different digestion).  I usually drink 2-3 raw eggs every 6 hours during the day, with 2 digestive enzyme tabs...
I keep 18-packs of eggs in my work fridge.
I survive on KETO all week, except on either Saturdays or Sundays I'll have a big cheat meal.
I wish I could have handled it as I was making decent gains until I developed the digestive issue.

Never thought to try digestive enzymes at the time though I have used them in the past..........I just felt so terrible I gave up on the idea.

One thing I`ll say is that tons of guys told me I`d get Salmonella (sp),but I never did and I ate a veritable ton of raw eggs.

something like 1 in 30,000 eggs contains salmonella

even if you eat it, the bacteria aren't guaranteed to give you an infection

Agree. I can eat McDonalds every day and get and stay shredded. The only thing that makes me look soft is overtraining and the body holding more fluid. Other than that as long as I don't overeat when hungry I stay shredded.

Pretty much all I eat is: meat (all kinds), eggs, leafy greens, and nuts. I keep it simple. Cooking or "meal prep" is extremely easy. just cook up some meat in bulk, buy a bag of spinach. and you've got your meals ready lol. Add in nuts between meals and you're set. Plus, fatty meats cost less than lean meats, so that's kinda nice.

ever get blood work done (e.g. lipid profiles)?

Learning about nutrition by putting your body through extreme diets and weight fluctuations, sounds good to me.
Hope you are enlightened beyond belief.

People don't want to accept, that, in the long run, it's going to be discipline that determines success. So, they look for a dietary magic bullet. Almost all of the people I've seen who are always on a diet, and talk about it endlessly, never lose weight for more than brief periods, then, quickly gain it back.

The psychological aspect of weight maintenance always gets the short shrift. All of us are continually bombarded with stimuli to overeat, whether it be a television commercial for Papa John's or a supermarket that puts the bakery right in front of the cashier. It takes mental toughness to overcome it all.

Ketosis is not a realistic LONG TERM option for MOST people. We have the holiday season coming up. How many are going to go through it until New Year's Day without eating anything sweet?

Bulking was the thing back in the day. I was a super lean sprinter in college. Then I spent about 10 years drinking gain weight shakes and lifting heavy. I really think I damaged my health doing that. If you have a choice in life of being a perma bulker or lean you should choose lean every time.

I also fell for the supplement nonsense like I guess we all do in our twenties. Just when you realize it's all bs there is another crop of twenty somethings putting out big money for the latest greatest snake oil scam.

I eat red meat probably 2ce a week. I stick to chicken thigh, salmon, tilapia (I really like the taste for some reason..), and eggs as a staple. And then when I feel like it I'll eat some med ground beef, ground chicken, ground turkey, ground bison. I try and mix it up, but I really like the tastes of chicken thigh so that's what I eat most of the time.

As for bloodwork, I get it done once a year, though this past year I didn't get the chance to. I plan on getting it done again in January. The only thing that's been a bit high is liver numbers, but I've been told that it could be due to training. I'd have to look back at the paperwork again, but IIRC that's the only thing that was on the high end, but not out of range.
I had extremely low testosterone in 2011 after I did a natty bb show, but it bounced back after I started eating fats again.

Keep in mind that I do take vitamins (not a multi-vit, but I buy them individually and take doses I feel like I need), fish oils, glucosamine, niacin. So that could also play a role in staying healthy since I'm sure I'm missing out on a lot of vitamins found in fruits and more "carby" vegetables.

Fully agree. Food is entrenched in our social culture as well. How anyone can live happily while being a full-time keto, and keep their relationships with those around them, is completely beyond me.

What is the point if you are already in shape, and have no intentions of competing, etc.? I don't think I will be on my deathbed thinking, "I'm glad I did that keto diet for X weeks/months instead of having a great time out with family and friends."

Just bust your ass and don't eat stupid amounts of calories.

I know people like to shit on keto because apparently it makes them moody or hazy or whatever else. I feel awesome on keto. I have more than enough energy to train as hard as I want and work 12hr days AND do school on top of that (part time masters student). I never have problems with thinking or tiredness. I say, if it works for you then why not do it? Not just from a physical point of view, but from a mental and well being point of view.
I have no problem "breaking" the diet every now and then, but I feel horrible the next day, headaches, laziness, tiredness. I'll hop back on keto and the next day I'm back to my normal self. I do live a bit like a hermit, but nothing to do with diet, its cause I work a lot and have to get schoolwork done after work. My days begin at 5am and end at 11pm.
On the rare occasion I do go out to dinner with friends/family or a date I'll just order a steak and some greens. Maybe some shrimp as an appetizer. No biggie.

Gotta weigh in here now cuz my main fellow headcase man Ceph is in the house now.
Keto did these things to me (and when i say keto, i mean anabolic diet-cheese, beef, full fat anything, oils, butter, green veggies and no carbs but maybe once a week). I did this for almost 8 weeks with no change in body comp or muscle growth.

-unpleasant personality
-Sever brain fog (to the point of not being able to grasp words i needed to use from my head, like would freeze)
-lipids all over the place (high as shit), triglycerides higher than when i was eating balanced diet (was still doing some heart health cardio)
-breath smelled awful
-overall uncomfortable with body,  didnt feel good
-bp was still semi high
-weight stayed same, and my wife even commented that i wasnt looking as good (dammnnn!)
-social outings with wife or friends became a hassle (thong, why are u not eating potatos), wife giving me dirty looks for not being a normal human like everyone else (for most anti social, always single, getbiggers this wont be an issue)
-not possible as a lifestyle, as much as you read or hear people say otherwise.

damn...I feel I would respond the same as you to this...I eat as balanced as I can, enjoy some extras when I feel, but eat good foods...grains /fruits/vege..just not overboard..i think a temporary keto for a few wks hardening/cut will suffice short term for a quick vacation or summer look...

All it takes is that one egg to make you pray to the porcelain god while you vomit and shit yourself at the same time for 48 hours before being rushed to the ER for dehydration.  Sooner or later you'll learn your lesson.

One way to avoid it is to buy pasteurized eggs.

I feel the same way. It's like raw clams on the half shell that's popular at this shore region where I live.  You can eat raw clams for a life time but when you hit the one with bacteria that you couldn't smell prior it will be coming out of both ends for days. It happened to me.
