Lying about THIS?   If it's true, I don't know how anyone can defend him anymore...

It  appears Ben Carson’s understanding of his own biography is about as trustworthy as his understanding of the pyramids.

The Republican’s presidential campaign admitted that a central point in his inspirational life story was fabricated, reported Politico.

A campaign official said Carson had made up a story about meeting with Gen. William Westmoreland and being offered a scholarship to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Carson, the retired neurosurgeon, claimed in his book, “Gifted Hands,” that he was introduced to Westmoreland in 1969, when he was 17 years old.

He claimed that he shared a meal with Westmoreland, who had just ended his command of U.S. forces in Vietnam, and the general was so impressed with the boy that he offered him a “full scholarship” to the military academy.

However, West Point has no record of Carson applying or being admitted to the academy.

“In 1969, those who would have completed the entire process would have received their acceptance letters from the Army Adjutant General,” said Theresa Brinkerhoff, a West Point spokeswoman.

The spokeswoman said West Point would have records to prove whether Carson had pursued the application process.

Carson’s campaign admitted the story was bogus when confronted with the evidence.

“Dr. Carson was the top ROTC student in the City of Detroit,” campaign manager Barry Bennett told Polico. “In that role he was invited to meet General Westmoreland. He believes it was at a banquet. He can’t remember with specificity their brief conversation but it centered around Dr. Carson’s performance as ROTC City Executive Officer.”

FR general consensus is "He's done".

Will he be single digit polling by Thanksgiving?

Joe, please post the text of that story so we can see what part shows that Carson didn't lie about his application and acceptances to West Point

Does Carson's book claim he was offered a "full scholarship" which is shown in quotes repeatedly in your link and I assume is pretty easy to verify in Carson's book

I'm not sure what the story is but Westmoreland may well have said that he would help him get an appointment or he should apply and he'd help etc...something along those lines. The fact that West Point has no record means nothing. It may have never have gone any further then that conversation.....that Carson has over inflated or used to show he's pro military or whatever. Using Westmoreland based on that guys' record in Vietnam doesn't say much about Carson...not something I'd crow about if he's using that to inflate himself. The bigger issue is maybe Poltico aught to dig into Hil a bit more....plenty of meat there...oh wait....that might not be helpful to her.

Well just read the daily caller story...seems Politico lied....Carson never admitted he lied and they (politico) misconstrued what he said or ment by meeting Westy....makes sense to me.

so you think that Westmoreland had the authority to offer entry into West Point without the person even having to apply?

Address the Daily Caller article.

from Carson's autobiography

In Carson's 1990 autobiography, 'Gifted Hands,' he wrote: "Later I was offered a full scholarship to West Point." He added that despite turning the offer down, "As overjoyed as I felt to be offered such a scholarship, I wasn't really tempted."

that is a complete fucking lie

Then...maybe he would have greased the wheels along with his application....now, no. It just doesn't work like that. You have to get nominated etc. There are other ways to get in and having a 4 star endorsement helps. Some commands at the 4 star level have slot authorization now that I think about it. I know the commander of 8th Army in Korea has 1-2 slots per year that allow a guy to go but they have to be qualified. There are, at lower levels ROTC scholarships that a General Officer can give out. This is not out of the realm of possibility now that I think about it. Now of which is the issue. If you look what Carson said..he never said he got it, just that Westy mentioned it.

Dr. Carson was the top ROTC student in the City of Detroit,” campaign manager Barry Bennett wrote in an email to POLITICO. “In that role he was invited to meet General Westmoreland. He believes it was at a banquet. He can’t remember with specificity their brief conversation but it centered around Dr. Carson’s performance as ROTC City Executive Officer. He was introduced to folks from West Point by his ROTC Supervisors,” Bennett added. “They told him they could help him get an appointment based on his grades and performance in ROTC. He considered it but in the end did not seek admission.”

The lede is outright false. Politico's Kyle D. Cheney starts with this claim: "Ben Carson’s campaign on Friday admitted, in a response to an inquiry from POLITICO, that a central point in his inspirational personal story was fabricated: his application and acceptance into the U.S. Military Academy at West Point." But no where in the piece does Cheney tell the reader where Carson made this "application and acceptance" claim.

(3) It is, of course, very easy to show that Carson never applied to or was accepted to West Point, if in fact he never applied. Thus, the entire piece hinges on this missing piece of information: where and when did Carson say that he applied to and was accepted to Westpoint?

(4) There is a lot of evidence that Carson never made that claim. Particularly, because in both his book and his speeches, he talks about whittling his options down to Harvard and Yale, and in the end deciding to apply only to Yale, where he was accepted.

(5) Carson's book does have a single line: "Later I was offered a full scholarship to West Point.” This isn't quite wrong either. Nobody gets scholarships per se to West Point; as a service academy, repayment is the term of service after graduation. But that's exactly Carson's point when he says he didn't take up the West Point opportunity because he didn't want the service commitment to delay his medical career.

In short, the Politico piece is deeply misleading because it misstates the lie that Carson supposedly told and mischaracterizes the campaign's response.

Face it, your black savior is a pathological liar who has weaseled his way into things his entire life.  I also think that the color of his skin has basically allowed him to make it this far, lies intact, to every single position he has held.  He is definitely of average to below average intelligence but does have a steady hand.

Either way, he is a failure and has no business being president of anything.  Well, he could do well at the NAACP. That is what he is more suited towards.

Carson lied.   Some of his supporters will blindly post a link, but the facts are facts.

over on the republican message boards, they already abandoned him for the garbage of the past week.  hilary would destroy his simple ass.   He may be a good surgeon, but he's very stupid on many other topics.

I never thought Carson had a chance (still don't) so his candidacy was never one I took seriously, but I heard this story today on radio and it certifies the fantasy of his candidacy.

It is one thing to tell your friends you were offered a full scholarship to West Point, and chose not to attend, but he wrote this down in a book when the fact is he never even applied to the institution.  Would he have have attend on a scholarship had he been admitted?  Yes.  But didn't even apply!  This loose association with the truth is inexcusable.  :-X
