Chavez turned the country from a beautiful country with a poverty problem into a massive shithole on the verge of civil war. He failed to deliver on any of his promises to solve the poverty problem. Stole property from wealthy citizens and alienated the upper class, who have fled the country or are attempting to flee without losing all of their money. Wealthy people run the businesses needed to sustain the lower classes. Once they leave, an entire country is plunged into darkness. You can't buy basic necessities like toilet paper because the country is filled with corruption. Venezuela produces the 4th or 5th most oil of any country in the world. The country has gone so far Dan Hill since the socialists took over. For Bernie Sanders fans, look at Venezuela to see what happens when you steal from the rich.
This, and let's not forget "nationalising" (ie stealing) oil mining facilities from private companies and subsidising fuel so 1 litre of petrol costs 1 cent. Yes $0.01. So they use petrol to cook, heat, everything - and let waste runoff go wherever it goes thus destroying environment. Total failure of a country - whenever a government says witch doctors make opposition bad or subsidise necessities below cost price to that extent they are distracting you from reality.
Funnily they "acquired" (stole) golf courses for social land and decried it as an elitist pig sport... until a Venezuelan golfer won a tournament and was lauded.
