Its the same reason why people say they are going to "Pray for France" or as you said, "We need to take revenge."

In the face of such catastrophe, people really do not know what to do. They feel helpless. I mean, what is praying really going to do? Absolutely nothing. All it does is assuage the guilty feelings about feeling helpless and not being able to help.

We are too inundated with "stuff" now-a-days. Back when you only had 3 - 5 channels and 2-3 newspapers, people actually had to sit, talk, and absorb what was going on. People actually sat down, and wrote letters, and marched for real things. Now, you post or twitter out something, perhaps add a hash tag to it, and you're done.
