Anyone who has ever powerlifted with those thin 25kg plates and been a newbie beside people pressing 4 or more 25kg plates/side knows how weak you feel beside people like this guy. I respect these raw lifts, who cares about the arch, way more than the shirted lifts of 1000lbs+.
I do hope that RAW lifting starts to gain more popularity.
Powerlifting is one of the oldest and most competed sports ever. Unofficially anway, and the bench in particular.

I mean, who hasn't tried their bench max against his buddies at some point?

But if your lift fails because you can not get the bar down on your chest... Hard to imagine any sporting activity that has had such a complete turnaround in what you're trying to do.

It might be something to do with structure or bone/tendon/ligament strength.

Wider hips/midsection for one thing. Maybe it's got something to do with Neanderthal genes, which supposedly is the one major genetic difference between people from south of Sahara and other ethnic groups on the planet.

My favorite iron game genre and era is 70's Powerlifting.
These days, mostly a fiasco / side show. (Except for the good raw leagues).

In my opinion, big benchers in the 70's and 80's had tremendous pec development and a thickness that is rarely seen today among pl'ers ( not that it matters because numbers are the name of the game). Maybe it is due to the tucking of the elbows combined with the modern shirts.

Blacks simply are not built for absolute strength.

Not that there haven't been some unreal black strength athletes, because there have been. But facts are facts. Whites of Northern European heritage own and will likely always own this world.

And the facts are the facts, blacks  have more fast twitch muscle fibers. (I'm not black so don't start the racist bs)   If every  young black athlete in america stopped  chasing the NFL dream and   took up olympic lifting we'd have gold medals in America. Swimming, marathon running, cycling, etc....whites will always have the advantage of course. But I don't know how you can spit such nonsense in a sport like powerlifting  that relies so heavily on Type II muscle fibers which blacks clearly have more of.

they are more gifted in explosive power  sports but generally they  don't have the muscular endurance whites do.

I don't know if it is absolutely true that powerlifting relies heavily on fast twitch compared to slower fibers, though.

It is certainly true that speed work is a big part of what is done but I am wondering if that is because generally speaking, we don't train fast twitch all that much. When you get down to the big weight for yourself, you slow down.  Everything slows down.

Not saying it isn't a big part of it, but to me, training fast twitch is the icing on the cake, not the primary source of strength in lifts at the maximum of your ability.

This is speculative, though - I'm not an expert.  I do have a decent natural bench and I do bench extremely slowly at max, but maybe I could be a hell of a lot better by incorporating more speed into my work.

(Not talking explosive olympic movements, obviously)

(Edit: doing a google search seems to suggest I'm probably wrong :))

Doesn't matter, either way. Blacks generally cannot compete with whites in displays of absolute strength and physical ruggedness.

Whatever the reason, big fuck-all.

We are kings.

There are a handful of raw benchers right now closing in on the 700 pound raw. The next 6 months is going to be really interesting to see who hits that 700 plus next. It's going to be a fun race to watch!

Asians (Koreans, Chinese, etc) have an advantage in weightlifting (Olympic) as they have short arms, short legs and long backs genetically. See medal table from IWF worlds - North Korea were leading last time I checked.

Races other than black are allowed to be genetically suited to sports.

The NFL dream hasn't stopped the US from producing world class sprinters so it shouldn't stop the US producing world class lifters either. That's not also taking into consideration that the vast majority of blacks don't live inside the US and aren't chasing NFL contracts. At the end of the day, people will always gravitate to what they are good at.

I just think there's more to absolute strength than purely muscular power and testosterone levels. Forgetting muscles for a moment, just think about the strength of bones, ligaments and tendons required to C&J +500lbs or bench +600lbs.
Look at the nation of Iceland. It's entire population is less than 1/10 the population of LA - yet it's produced among the finest strength athletes in history. There must clearly be some genetic reasons for this.
