We are going to be more like the US in western Europe. I am actually considering joining a competitive shooting club and getting a gun myself to keep in my bedroom. Here is the problem.

There will be a 50-year period, from the time the guns are banned, until they're mostly gone.  During that time, good guys will turn them in, and bad guys will keep them.  Bad guys will gain power for decades.  Sure, guns will rust, bullets will run out, and over time, the place will be safer.

HOWEVER, for that 50 year period (for most of us, the rest of our lives), the USA would totally suck.

As for the Constitution...yes, The Framers were flawed people but very wise - and they heavily borrowed from other charters - but the Bill of Rights has been a great protection for the US common citizen. A level headed person understands that the Constitution is a living document that can be changed, but the Bill of Rights is not to be changed. It is considered the basis for individual liberty for citizens of the US. Since protections have been steadily eroded since the 60s - and even more so since 9/11 - I agree we are becoming powerless to stop our own corporate owned, media spinning, govt. There is no argument that we have willfully allowed govt to take even more powers that were never intended for them since 9/11. I wouldn't call it paranoia. Jefferson warned about corporate ownership of the govt leading to another form of tyranny. There is a reason it is the 2nd amendment you know. Importance.

I think non-US people have trouble understanding how huge and out of touch with most of the population the govt actually is. The USA has done things on the world stage that most of us as citizens scratch our heads in confusion about. It has been that way since Vietnam. To think because we have an interventionist foreign policy that somehow translates into how we view private and lawful firearm ownership is in error. It doesn't...because we have always had them.

So we are not "supporting" anything as the OP states. Our society is changing for the worse for various reasons, but there is not a willful push from lawful gun owners to include crazies that do mass shootings. People who follow laws don't go out and do mass shootings. Pretty simple, really.
