Yup. Mike Webster figures large. Now, there's a sad NFL story. No wonder the league tried to suppress this shit. Dave Duerson and Junior Seau both shot themselves in the chest; the former leaving a note to examine his brain. Both had CTE. I love me some football, but if you think the NFL is all about player's health you are a fool. It's all about the do-re-mi. I guess that explains Coach's post.
Any sport is a risk some more than others. Staying healthy in any sport is priority ONE and precautions are taken but never guaranteed. As far as concussions in football, even before most of these studies started exploiting the concussion risk, coaches, strength coaches, neurologists, etc knew about the risk. The precautions were taken in way of neck pads, more helmet padding, training the neck, etc. Time's have changed and so has equipment, tackling and training protocols. A few years ago Pete Carroll introduced Rugby-style tackling drills to the NFL as well as High School athletes that has reduced concussions.
For the last 3 years, in my gym and at a couple of other schools I've hosted a concussion prevention and a "protect the neck" clinic taught manual neck training and for those schools that are lucky enough of afford a four way neck machine along with implementing other protocols. We also bring in other coaches, orthos, physical therapists and chiros.
I'll be at the Indiana summit in Feb.
