Remember in my younger days in Scotland all the older Guys drunk whisky with a wee chaser(small beer). I never really liked the taste myself but then again i only really drunk Whisky on a couple of occasions.. my Uncle worked all his life in a whisky Distillery and it was a very well known Distillery. He always Drunk it neat. My Father drunk it with water or soda water.

I think for most people, its about the social and environmental ambience when it comes to drinking alcohol. Not because they truly appreciate the taste. But, then again, I dislike the taste of most alcohol, so I'm probably biased.

As a bourbon connoisseur with over 20 bottles on my bar I can assure you that you can taste the subtleties in them.
A big difference between lets say Rebel Yell and Rebel Yell single barrel.
