SCOTT, You are one of the few GetBiggers I pay attention to when it comes to reasonable bodybuilding comments and I 'partially' agree with your comments above.

I think what you said is one of the main reasons for the 'establishment' of this new NPC Classic Bodybuilding endeavor.

Based on a brief discussion with other old-timers who are 'bodybuilding educated' based on years of experience, this new breed of Classic Bodybuilders may be led by the likes of contenders such as Sergi  Constance (Spain), Calum Vonmoger (Australia), and a small number of other potential greats in this new NPC Classic event that slowly faded away around the early 70's.

In your personal opinion .... do you think that the general public will support this new breed of 'athlete' and will the success of this new  Classic Physique event change your opinion about the 'sport' of bodybuilding in general?

I personally think that it will be a bigger success than the majority of GetBiggers think possible.

Include "Physique" in the above statement!

THANKS, SCOTT ..... Stunt

Do you have anything positive to say?

Anything that is pre-arnold or pre-1970's in general, no, he does not. He is the typical old guy who believes that EVERYTHING was better in his days. Next thing he will be telling us is that medicine was better in the 1950's than it is today.  ;D ;D

No offense The Scott, but its true.  :D :D

The Scott, what do you think about Shawn Rays physique?

SF, There are 'tons' of people who feel the same as SCOTT when it comes to competitive bodybuilding and I do realize that you realize that that is why the NPC and other sanctioning bodies saw the 'handwriting on the wall' and will be very successful with these new events ... Physique and Classic BB.

And while I am ancient enough to agree  that some things have gotten better since the good old days, I can honestly tell ya that some things were so much better way back when!

Gas was 28 cents a gallon (max).
Sat morning movie ticket was a dime, 8 cartoons, two serials, and some Three Stooges or Our Gang stuff.
Ice cream, two scoops on a sugar cone was 10 cents.
Cup of coffee was 5 cents.
A three bedroom home was less than $15,000.
10 cents to ride the SF cable car (now $5)
Disneyland pass with ride tickets .... $12 or less?
I think I paid less than $2,500 for my first VW.
College education  ... I forget but I paid it and only worked in the post office a couple of hours after classes and had more than enough funds to raise hell on the weekends. I'm gonna guess that a college year was less than $300.

Everything was so damn cheap  that only one family member had to go to work.

SO ... In many respects ... things were so much better then!

As far as the game of Bodybuilding ..."Is it better, or is it not? .... that's all within the eyes of the beholder.

And old friend Shawn Ray was one of the best !

Not about this kid.  What, pray tell, is good about this individual?  What?  How is one supposed to be "positive" about someone as drug built and ignorant as this young man?  Shall I damn him with faint praise?  Should I sing the praises of PJ and his company for sponsoring such a great athlete?

What I do is no different than others here save that I do it better. So often people make light of the Christ and I could easily (and sometimes do) turn a phrase before turning a cheek. But I digress...

What is good about this manlets physique, his state of mind, his future?  Near as one can honestly tell, nothing.  As Judge Smails said in "Caddyshack" - "Well, the world needs ditch diggers too."

I'm not being negative, rather I am positive that he and his drug built body are worthless.  Again, point out something truly worthy about this sort of person.  Now point out something truly worthy about his sponsor(s).  About the so-called "Industry".

Look, even the HA has a Toy Run at Christmas time but that most assuredly doesn't erase the evil they do.

You desire positive?  Bob Paris should have won a few Mr. Olympias.   Lee Labrada too.  I am quite positive about that.  I cannot change the past but neither will I kowtow to the present state of idiocy that is bodybuilding.  If I see someone or something that merits praise, I will give it.

Praising mediocrity, lauding cookie-cutter over-drugged look alike bodies is not something a rational, thinking person does.

Looks like I tickled your soul very effectively :D
Interesting that you mention Paris & Labrada, since both of them weren't natural either and speaking of manlets, Lee wasn't quite the tallest. Granted, both were gifted by their genetics and posing skills, more than Cody, but it seems that you're negative about the current generation by default, no matter how talented someone is and no matter how hard someone is working in the gym. Do you believe that's fair?

Anything that is pre-arnold or pre-1970's in general, no, he does not. He is the typical old guy who believes that EVERYTHING was better in his days. Next thing he will be telling us is that medicine was better in the 1950's than it is today.  ;D ;D

Well, that's the impression I get from our good man The Scott, this 'anything was better in the past thing'. He will always find 'reasons' to criticise 'things of the now', as if everything was perfect in the past ::)

Sure, bodybuilding was better back in the day, but The Scott won't even credit where credit is due because the bodybuilder just happens to be born in a certain era. I mean, I wonder what he will say about Shawn Rays physique because he didn't compete in the 1960's or 1970's. I don't care in what time frame the person competed in. As long as they look good.

And so was the average income back then. The current prices are mainly a product of inflation.

Yes, cup of coffee was 5 cents, but................

In 1950 the average income per year was $3,210.00 and by 1959 was $5,010.00.

Yes, things cost more now, but people are making a lot more than they did in the 1950s.

Yes, Brady Bunch too.

In The Scotts world, that is the ideal world: White, heterosexual, Christian/Catholic.

As with SF, do not be so presumptively absurd about me.   ;D  I am more than aware that neither were natural.  As to being a manlet, that is not entirely the realm of the short of stature but that may not have yet occurred to you, my friend.

But it should have. ;D

As for Shawn Ray?  Nice physique. I think Makkawy was better and Padilla a lot better but Ray was fantastic and not just for his "time".   Manlet can be more a state of self esteem and self respect or rather, the lack thereof.  None of three men I just mentioned are manlets by any means.   But that photo of Ray putting eyelash gunk on himself is suspect... ;D

This current generation of bodybuilders is pathetic because quite honestly now more than ever drugs make the man.  Or in some cases make the woman a man. Disgusting.   It takes no effort to stuff yourself at the pharmacy buffet.  None.  I have often stated that Arnold is the best ever on drugs and that Reeves and Park are the best naturals of all time.  This of course brings the manlets out in droves squeeling about how Reeves and Park were on testosterone.

Were all things better in the days gone by? Nope. Some were, many were not.  The typical kneejerk reaction is to bring up segregation and assign that as desirable by people such as I.   Ridiculous.   Not my problem and for the record I believe there still exist segregated colleges but fortunately for them they are for black people or women and so that form of segregation is sacrosanct.  ;D  And I could care less but reference it to show that it exists but in a form that is somehow "acceptable"... ;D

I don't have to be "fair". The world is not "fair" and that I despise such as Cody is my right.  If he says he thinks I am an idiot, I would simply laugh at him because that would not be (entirely!  ;) ) true but conversely if I say that his physique is built on drugs, I would be correct.

I have no problem with you thinking other people had better phsyiques than Shawn Ray, because I agree with you. But at least you admit that he had a nice physique, instead of being all like, "UGH, he was not from the 1970's, horrible physique!!"

This might be off-topic (but who cares, this IS Getbig), but it's perfectly understandable that many elderly people have a hard time with this changing world, since we never had a drastic change in such a short time before. People can adapt to changes, but maybe we've reached a limit?

Stunt, I am leaning toward the side of the general public will never again accept bodybuilding as anything other than a display of drugs on legs.  Pandora's Box was opened with the film "Pumping Iron" wherein we saw the difference drugs make between those on and those who were never on.

But as with Pandora's Box when "Hope" was the last to emerge from within, so too may "Classic Physique" bring optimism to what was once a health oriented part of life.

As in years gone by, the arms, calves and neck should measure as close to the same as possible and the chest should be the equal of both thigh measurements.

And no gut. If you've got a gut you get no glory. Judges should be men like Frank Zane, Dave Dupre, Bob Paris, Lee Labrada and others whose physiques were aesthetic instead of assthetic.   Presentation should be a part of the judging process and lurid displays the likes of Kai Greene should never be allowed even as guest posers.  This ain't Houses of the Schmoely.

The taint of the Schmoe is all over today's bodybuilding.  Time to clean house.  Hopefully Classic Physique will do just that.  One can hope.

Change sometimes is not always good. Sometimes change can be for the bad. Bodybuilding "changes" are a reflection with the "changes" that are going on in this world. Lowered expectations, lowered standards. There is apparently guidelines that the judges must go by. But, they are inconsistent in using those standards. Corruption runs rampant. Among other things. And we complain, but we starting to get used to it.

True Parker, not all changes lead to progress and I agree with many that the overall BB quality was better in the nineties, like the Levrones, Yatess, Cormiers, Rays, etc (I know, some believe even longer ago).

My point however is, is that many elderly people fall in that typical 'anything was better in the past' trap. They will always find faults in today's society.

True. But aren't almost all of us are guilty of that as we age?
For instance, I agree with the poster that said that Steve Reeves wasn't "all that". And old school guys point to him as ideal. And that many of the aesthetic guys of the 80s-90s can't touch him. I say it's the other way around. Yet, his phyisque looks like he is "in shape". You have reg guys who walk around like that. I just think Steve Reeves had a physique that was trained to a "certain level" that was exceptional for the time, due to not many people at the time being that phyiscally fit let along trained. Nowadays, you can find guys who have trained for a year or two and look like he did or better. Sure some don't have the height, but they had the proportions.
I believe that many of the older people of today do have some valid points. But, I also believe that not everything was better "in their day".

I believe that many of the older people of today do have some valid points. But, I also believe that not everything was better "in their day".

To answer your question, yes, that's why I wrote typical. So I believe it's always a good and wise thing to analyse our judgements/opinions, like what do they say about us and do we see/understand the whole picture?

Yeah, apart from his set of genes, Steve's physical advantage was the era where he grew up.

BTW, it's understandable that people strive to stay in line with nature and in this sense I understand people like The Scott very well.
