canada was afflicted with hyundais first mass produced car the pony. It was a top selling car for a period but it was awful. I think it was $5000 new or something.
Hyundai was shitty until a few years ago.

What's it worth if he doesn't fix it?  $500?

This is always the question when a car with this many miles has something major go wrong.

I think he could fix it for $1200 and sell it for $2500, but these numbers depend on how much work he's willing to do.

How can he sell it for $2500 when the Kelly blue book and Edmunds has it listed at around $1500 if it runs?  I can't see paying for the head gasket work, timing belt and water pump for around $1500 to $2000 if the end result is a $1500 dollar car. I am not being a car snob.  I've have driven many junk cars in my life.

Truth. That is the point, if he has to ask about it. He isn't going to do the work himself. He has 2 opinions. Band aid and drive it until it dies. Or sell it.

Hertz has a used car division. You can usually find some good deals. You rent the car for a weekend and if you like it, you can opt to buy it:

People drive rentals like a rock star takes care of his hotel room. Buy a rental at your own peril.

These aren't the numbers I'm seeing on KBB or on Craigslist.  There are 2007 Elantra's with 190K going for $3000 on Craigslist.

While surely in some instances, it's largely a myth.

People often rent cars in unfamiliar areas, and tend to drive slower because they don't know the terrain. You don't want an accident or trouble with the law.

Last summer, I rented a car in Saratoga. Cops are very vigilant up there. I literally didn't go a mile over any speed limit.

Only a fool would pay that much and the person who put up that Craigslist's ad is counting on that. Look up Kelly blue book and Edmunds for that car and mileage as a private person sale.

It also gives the seller some room when he gets a lowball offer. 2k would probably get you any of those 3k ads.
