Over the top
« on: March 30, 2016, 06:26:02 AM »
Re watched it recently. It was a bit of a departure from stallones usual stuff. When I used to lurk back in the day on getbig I remember onlyme's stories about his involvement in the movie.

Stallone's attention to detail as a director for certain scenes is pretty awesome

The punch that Bull Hurley gave Hawk during the final match that made his nose bleed was real. Stallone told the guy to do it since he was the director but didn't give him a "cue point" in which to do it. Meaning Stallone never knew when it was going to happen so that his reaction would be authentic to the hit. Stallone stated that he took more punishment in trying to be authentic in this movie by taking actual hits such as this one and arm-wrestling professionals that were hired for the film, than he did in any of the Rocky movies.

To make the movie seem as authentic as possible, Stallone told the guy playing Bull not to take it easy on him when it was time for them to shoot the final scene of their match together. The guy laughed about the idea but still agreed to do so even though he warned Stallone that he may hurt him. Stallone, made him eat those words when he beat him for real. Everything in that scene is authentic except for close-up shots of their face that were done later due to injuries that both men suffered while the scene was being filmed. Stallone suffered a strained forearm while Bull Hurley's character suffered a dislocated shoulder. The cry from him that you can hear when Stallone is pulling his arm down at the end is the real thing. That's when it happened.

Wish onlyme was around to confirm the last para.

Winner takes it all.

Loved the movie as a kid, still love it now. Has a great message too that unfortunately wouldn't be relevant today. "The world meets no-one half way"

STEFANO, I'm unable to confirm any of the above but KEITH and I often discussed our days in HOLLYWOOD while working on various projects and regarding OVER THE TOP, I do recall that a lot of that film's budget was financed by numerous companies whose products were shown in a number of scenes ..... And I sort of recall Keith saying that the advertisement of the side of Stallone's truck cost some company a shitload of cash.

And I do kind of recall that Stallone's wife had something to do with Keith's loss of some important scene in that film simply due to the fact that he (Keith) was too good looking to be in the same scene with Sly or something like that.

And before I sign off here is some sort of related story (fact???) that Keith once mentioned in passing which he might have even wrote on this here GetBig Board.

One afternoon he was driving through Stallone's neighborhood (was it Beverly Hills) and realized that he had to go to the bahroom, so he pulled into Sly's driveway, got out of the car and knocked on the front door.

Someone answered and Keith, and after being informed that Sly was out, asked if he could use the bathroom.

I forget the rest of that particular story but one day I happened to be driving with him in Cher's neighborhood and he said, "I have to go to the bathroom!"

I was sort of relieved when Cher's gate was locked up tight and the security wall was too high to climb.

And then there was the Bob Hope episode ..... but I've forgotten that one entirely.

NJ, Thanks!

I should also mention that KEITH was very impressed by the money raised by a PRODUCT PLACEMENT company for OVER THE TOP, so somehow he contacted that company and eventually became a "major player' signing contracts with major companies to get their produces seen in major TV and motions picture productions.

Watching TV with Keith in the house, you'd hear stuff like, "See that toaster!!!! I placed that there and it only cost General Electric (?) ten-thousand dollars!!!"

And after that scene was shot, he'd take that toaster home .... unless the principal actors grabbed it first.

Keith's apartment was loaded with stuff most of you GetBiggers have most likely seen in some TV episode or movie scene.

While we are on this OVER THE TOP subject, I should mention this in passing.

That same afternoon when Cher's gate was closed, we drove a few blocks over to Aaron Spelling's mansion, but not to use the bathroom this time!

It was simplyu Keith's idea of a 'Drive-by' to show me how some (a very few) people lived in extremely big and extremely expensive houses.

I actually thought he was going to use the bathroom in this 'hotel' but as were passed it, he simply said, "That's Aaron Spelling's house!"

CUT!

OH, YRA! I forgot to mention that Keght often complained about the fact that the entire assembly of those present during that 'arm bending' scene were locked up in that  LV hotel ballroom and could not leave until the entire scene was shot.

In order to prevent a riot, they had to bring in extra food!

I guess 'extra food' always solves the problem when hungry extras are  involved.

Same thing happened years ago on one or two  of the Planet of the Apes shots!
