Advice required on rhomboid tear

Anybody whose had one and rehabed it. Any advice on what u did to heal it and/ or get relief from the nagging pain? Much appreciate help.

Yes, one of HS football players was training with his team. The coach told them to "max out" on push press. The coaches version of s push press was actually a push jerk. The difference being a push press required pushing the bar up as opposed to dropping under the bar. Doing a "max" on the push jerk cause his rhomboid to tear due the extreme load.

Depending on the severity it takes a while. Lots of flexibility, anti-inflammatories, taping (we use rocktape) and ice/heat contrast.

Just give it plenty of time and don't fuck with it. If you just mask the pain and tough it out you'll end up like Tom Prince.

Baby it.  Do not take pain meds before training, it only anesthetizes you and you'll make it worse.  Get more than one doctors opinion.  Don't do anything that hurts.  Lots of cardio/blood flow will help it heal faster.

I read a training article recently that said that tape was placebo bullshit. Do your clients get any relief out of it? The same article said that "rest" and "ice" out of "rice" we're counter-productive.

I had one more than 10 years ago. The best thing i did was to stop any kind of training, even aerobic. Eight or ten months off.

Tore my hammy sprinting four weeks ago (blood under skin, etc) - instantly hit with Ice, compression, aleve and k-tape.

Played 100% only one week later, and have been squatting, running, rucking no prob since.

So, I'm not sure what helped, but there could be something to it - if you stretch it over the injury, I think the thought is it "activates the muscle" or something.....could be BS....but who knows.

Personally I think it has its place. The theory is that when you apply the KT it will contract raising the epidermis allowing better blood flow to the immediate area. I use the rocktape because it stays on much longer, is a stronger material and can brace with it. We used the Rocktape for one my athletes on his shoulder before he did the 225 at the combine because they don't allow any type of joint brace. Seemed to work just fine.

how do you tear a rhomboid? i read your post coach but such an odd muscle with odd attachments, i wouldn't think it would be susceptible to a tear

The one that happened to one of my athletes was the cause of his high school coach placing to heavy of a load on an overhead exercise. If you think of the movement of the push jerk of dropping under the bar then extending and knee lock out it places a lot of stress in the upper back/mid-thoracic as opposed to the push press where it's just a overhead press with hip drive. In the case of my athlete, this happened two years ago when he was a freshmen and to this day is still dealing with the repercussions of that injury. This is what happens when you have coaches that work with kids not realizing you can't train them the same as adults or more mature athletes athletes like juniors and seniors because they don't have the scap or core stability.

You don't see these injuries very often or at least I don't. Unless it's severe there isn't much you can do about it but it painful to take deep breaths.
