Even as a long time Superman fan I have zero interest in this.  Less than zero.

Goyer is a shitty writer too.  I can't believe people hold him up as some kind of a great artist.  Fuck him and his boring, unnecessarily complex scripts.

Exactly.  Superhero movies are getting oversaturated.  Way too many of them over the last 10 years.  People get burned out quickly.  Same thing happened with the zombie genre.

Not really, you mean the Batman, Superman, X-Man superhero movies. They haven't even scratched the surface yet. There is a lot of material out there. For instance, 100 Bullets.

100 Bullets would be good. But if they start changing things like Preacher is copping then fuck it. 100 Bullets needs to be the same to base everything on the history of America then it would do great.

Yup. Even if the bar is set low, they will figure out a way to limbo under it.  Of course this is not always so and given the desire of the public for "more", I can see why delivering it (whatever "it" may be) can be difficult.

Show scrapped but movie in the works. Imo something like this should be a show, too much to wrap up in a movie.

It could even be a show.

once upon a time, the western genre was the most popular on the silver screen, super hero movies could end up the same way as western did.....saturation is never a good thing

Yup.  A "horse opera" they called them.  A horse opera in space is exactly what the original Star Wars was.  And I agree on the saturation aspect as it diminishes the grandeur of it all.  In the 60s and early 70s "The Wizard of Oz" came on TV once a year and was deemed a big deal, an event if you will.

The same is true of basketball.  In the early 70s it was once a month or so, usually on ABC's Wide World of Sports.  All sports were this way.  Now there are networks and shows dedicated to bringing the public nothing but sports.

Meh.  A little sugar in your coffee or tea is fine.  Too much and you gets the diabeetus.

Anything attached to a super hero will make money. Hollywood knows this, so they cater to the people who will see it.

Totally agree.  They'll milk this cash cow as far as it will go.

I don't disagree that oversaturation is possible, but one big difference between westerns and superhero movies is that westerns were typically pretty cheap. A few years ago, young adult/dystopian movies were big and they faded out. Part was oversaturation, but I would say that a bigger part was the fact that the source material was pretty weak. There is a long, rich history to mine when it comes to comic book movies. I would compare it to computer animated children's films. CGI animation has pretty much displaced hand-drawn animation and  it seems like a new hit animated film comes out every month. If you ever take a look at the most profitable children's films it seems hard to believe they can make so much money. Also, they stress test the hell out of the stories for hit children's movies. They make sure they adhere to solid story structure and have a message. Some adult films go into production without a finished script, and many are still tinkering with the script throughout production.

There were possibly other factors. The time frame, the generation that watched them grew up. And plots. They were almost always the same. Now, you can tell the story from a Native American perspective, from African Americans perspective, from a Chinese perspective, or a woman's perspective. Remember Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, was a huge hit in the 90s. And I think they are starting to revisit the genre again. A lot of rich history, especially since we know a whole lot more about the lifestyle of many peoples back then,  and  along with the romanticism that had captured an older generation.
