there are so many situations in the book where Roland needs to be a white fella.  the mentioned tension between he and Odetta,  Jack Mort's eyes turning steel grey when Roland takes over. you can't even have a laundry soap commercial any more without every ethnicity represented as well as non traditional couples fighting over soap.  it's out of hand.

Uh huh. If his colour is an integral part of the story it shouldn't be fucked with.

Idris is a brilliant actor, but he's not Roland.

It's not. The story doesn't hinge on Roland being white any more than it hinges on Roland looking like Stephen King. I always figured the Detta storyline was obviously going to be extremely scaled back because there's not really a way to show most of it onscreen.  Most of it takes place in her head. I also thought her legs would be a big technical issue. Some people think they might cast Detta as something other than white. Or Susannah might see any number of things when she looks at Roland. Any changes that would have to be made in regards to Roland's race don't really have much impact on the actual story.

Not if you want to tell a different story. Roland and Eddie both near died because they were white. The end part of the second (or is it third?) book hinges on racially spurred events.
A lot of Eddie and Odetta's relationship is play around their racial differences.
The Dark Tower series isn't just great because of the events, part of what makes the story great is the development and growth of the characters and their relationships with each other. And they're changing those things.

I like Idris in every other role I've seen him in, but I don't think he's right for this story.

I agree with the first part of the bolded text, not the second part. All we know is that Roland is black. We don't know what any of the other changes are going to be. As much as I love this series, I always figured they'd have to make a lot of changes to bring it to the big screen. On top of that, I just never really considered it sacrosanct. It was obvious he wrote the last few books in a whirlwind just to make sure they were finished before he died. I enjoyed them overall, but there's so much about those last three books that I wouldn't mind seeing excised from the film adaptation. The story of the callas was utterly insane. I was fine with it on the first readthrough, but the Susan Delgado storyline seemed sort of self-indulgent in the context of the entire series and I always  wondered how much time a movie would spend on it. I know a lot of people just assume that I love the fact that a black actor was cast in the lead, but I just don't see any issue with this casting because I always figured a lot of changes were going to be necessary. I just think Elba's going to do an overall good job. McConauhargle was actually offered the role of Roland but turned it down for Flagg.

What part are you referring to when you say Eddie and Roland almost died because they were white? The fight with Detta?

STFU, you know it's just PC BS and you're gamely defending it. Your sad ass probably saw the Ghostbusters remake with all the ugly bitches and told yourself that it was superior to the original. I'm pretty sure that if you actually lived in Texas, your neighbors would beat your ass.

Why do you hate black people so much?

Yeah, Detta with the hand cannon, Eddie trussed up and hog tied etc.

The whole build up to that is, in my eyes, integral to the story. Roland has pulled through a worthless junky, a character he despises. And Eddie despises him for it. But as they both have to work together keeping Detta in that chair and moving things change. Roland starts to see more of Eddie, his steel. It's the beginning of Eddie's growth and the beginning of Roland's acceptance of him as Roland is capable of less and less and Eddie pushes on and on.

We can't see that story on screen if it isn't dem pecker dicked Honky mafuckers against Odetta.

The Dark Tower series is my favourite series by far, so I'm going to have a dislike for any deviation from the story as it's written. It's been ingrained in my head how it was written for over a decade. There are lots of tiny pieces of the story that fit perfectly into the bigger picture.

You do not understand, friend. I hate ridiculous political correctness and pointless progressivism, not any race. Except Muslims. Their religion is fucking crap.

Uh, you do know that black babies were used in laundry detergent ads to show how "white" the detergent could get the clothes?

I didnt

When you use racist language to express your dislike of a certain race, then that's racism, no? I just don't get the response to the earlier poster. I mean, why even bother? Most members probably don't care one way or the other and you didn't even bother to wait more than one page within the same thread before posting an unecessary rebuttal that obviously isn't true.

Anyway, keep doing your thing. It's the variety of voices and messages that makes getbig great. Even when they come from the same person.

I'm trying to understand your post here. are you suggesting that the use of non white actors has not changed in the last few years?

First pics of MM as the Man in Black. He was originally offered the role of Roland Deschain but turned it down Flagg.
