I got a invite to go to a wedding in Spain and they wanted a thousand dollars as a gift.   so, I pay for travel, hotel for a week, give them a thousand bucks and i have to pay my ticket back.   It seems like a wedding is some kind of racket. Ohh, and they also want their guests dressed on suits that start off at $500....

Chances are they haven't given your expenses a second thought.  It will cost you more than you think... rehearsal dinner night, time off work, new clothes for the trip, bachelor party, the money dance...). One week out from the wedding, I'll guarantee they won't remember the amount of cash you gave.

How close are you to the groom?  Would you choose him to be in YOUR wedding party?  How many bridesmaids/groomsmen?  Have you been asked just to fill a spot because the bride is having a bunch of sorority sisters stand up? Do you know the bride? How long have they been together?  Are they set in their careers or just starting out?  Are they currently living together?  Own or renting?  Where is the wedding; East coast, West coast, Midwest?

Not really an honor to be in a wedding, more like punishment when they expect that of you.

My groomsmen spent $10 total on their outfit. Just a shirt. The whole rental stuff is terrible/bad move to do to your friends, IMO.
