Here's the deal. A good friend of mine asked me to be part of his wedding party. He's getting married in July. Plane tickets will cost me about $1200 , then hotel for a few nights is $600, tux rental is like $250. I'll be out over $2k already. Not even counting $ for food and drinks and anything else we do plus I might need a rental car. Shit load of money for a wedding that isn't even mine. Now I'm trying to figure out how much I should give him as a present.
I don't need bullshit answers about him bailing out. I know marriage is a suckers deal but he's going through with it.
What's a good amount to give? I really need some advices.

As far as weddings, I've been in several, and a best man at one. The whole thing is a sham of epic proportions.

Tell them it's squat day and save yourself the money/misery.

(At the wedding for which I served as best man, my buddy and his bride spent the entirety of the afternoon and evening fighting. In the limo ... at the park taking photos ... at the reception ... Nightmare. Within a year of the "happy nuptials", he porked some ditzy broad he knew from high school, years and years ago. In his car. Now he has two bratty-as-fuck boys with the wife and she's perpetually angry with him about everything.)

I remember back when a $50 wedding gift was a lot of money, now $150-200 is about average.

I don't go to weddings because I don't believe in marriage. Problem solved.

Not trying to hijack your thread but I'm in a similar situation. I have to pay a thousand bucks for plane tickets 250 for tux rental 300 for hotel. I'm one of his groomsmen. I have to travel for another wedding a month later and spend almost as much. Sister is having a baby I have to fly home for that.

I don't think I'm going to be able to fly again for his bachelor party. I have a feeling he's going to be disappointed but fuck I just started making half way decent money recently.

If you don't want to go just tell 'em you appreciate the invitation but can't afford to attend. It's a whole lot nicer than "I don't care to come to your stupid shit."

They're Greek so they don't register. Cash is key. I'd easily give $500 if it wasnt costing me 2k already. Basically $300 will probably just cover their cost per guest.

I'd hope they realize how much it's costing me to be there. That is fly to cancun and fuck prima whores for a week money and I'd still have $1k left.

There are enough diamonds being held that if they were to hit the market the value would plummet. The fuckers control the market and release only what they want. I heard rumors of mines in Siberia that contain millions of carats then all of a sudden nothing. No more news. No more mention.
