Depression/suicide
« on: June 16, 2016, 09:44:56 PM »
Ive said it before ill say it a million times more. Depression isnt a joke. Its not something "they'll get over". They arent just having a bad day. If you know someone who is or might be suffering...please reach out and talk to them before its too late.

RIP Rob. Im sorry you didnt know how much we all loved you

Good post, I struggle with depression and anxiety at times and so do several other getbiggers.

My friends father killed himself a couple years ago due to depression. Very sad. Sometimes people just need someone to talk to.

For sure. Less than a handful of people know I have these problems. I would never take medicine for it tho, just my personal choice.  It's messed up that side effects for some of these meds are suicide.

Reaching out and talking to depressed people isn't as easy as it sounds, because in most cases you don't even know they are depressed to begin with, as they mask their depression when they are in public.   One thing I have seen that is rather common is withdrawal.  Had a couple friends go through bouts of depression not too long ago. Both had deleted their Facebook accounts, which should have been a clue, but at the time I didn't think much about it.  was only later that I learned they did that because they were depressed and that was part of the withdrawal process.

My dad, my aunt, my grandma and two of her brother committed suicide.  I believe they may have all suffered from a fork of bipolar disorder.  I was lucky not to inherit any of this and I thank the lord everyday I did not.

interesting opinion about facebook. i would argue that deleting social media bullshit is a step to rid oneself of depression. when you are no longer controlled by the compulsive "must show people what im doing for social value/validation", its actually quite liberating. a well rounded adult should not be wasting time with facebook, wasting countless hours watching what other people are supposedly doing. honestly not posting on GB either lol, but i havnt mastered that yet. I actually know of people who were showing signs of depression and their daily mood being affected by how many likes or whatever they would get on FB for something they would post. they deletd it, but have since came back to it, and the cycle continues.

You are correct, it should be talked about more. There shouldn't be a stigma around people suffering like that.

anytime i see a man in tears or suffering from some non-life threatening stuff(peolpe close dying excluded) it reminds me to never become that person, a man must know how to cope with problems and be a safety net for others not the other way around. This is your job guys, don't fuck it up! Be strong, read books, watch videos ... Julio Caesar put it nicely

I think a significant part of depression is the use of alcohol and rec drugs and people not handling coming off them or the body not recovering properly from them.

If FB is about interacting with people you already know, then fine.  Also, I guess once in a rare while, you make a new real-life friend or even hookup physically via that channel, and that's all well and good.  But honestly when I got caught up in it after avoiding it for years, mostly what I did is follow people half way around the world that I'm never going to truly interact with and also focus on the most outstanding physiques on the planet accompanied by constantly comparing myself.  That became a useless and non-satisfying rat race after a while, so I'm off FB altogether again and, as stated above, find it "liberating."  Back 100% to real friends/real interactions.

For some people life just isn't it. Even if ''all the standard components'' which supposedly should make someone's life ''complete'' are there.

They will step out. Nobody will see it coming. Not a pill or therapy will help them. Probably overloading them with cash, hookers or even drugs won't change their constant feeling of emptyness.

Respect their choice and courage to leap into the unknown.

Sorry for your loss Blinky. I have seen it in my own family, it is no joke. Anti Depressants can be dangerous if not watched and given correctly. I have seen and heard of quite a few cases, where it has worsened the depression, and led to suicide.
